Overview
Al-Hasan b. Muhammad b. al-Sabbah al-Baghdadi, Abu 'Ali al-Za'farani (154–260 AH) — jurist, hadith scholar and master of eloquence, counted among the transmitters of al-Shafi'i's "old" corpus. He was the reader in al-Shafi'i's circle: when the imam arrived in Baghdad none dared read to him but al-Za'farani, who read him all the books save two. The Six-save-Muslim transmitted from him, and Baghdad's Darb al-Za'faran took its name from him. He died in Ramadan 260 1.
