Overview

Abu 'Umar Muhammad b. 'Abd al-Wahid b. Abi Hashim al-Zahid, mawla of Tha'lab, known as al-Mutarriz; he kept Abu'l-'Abbas Tha'lab's company long, so he was known and named for him and took abundantly from him — he supplied what escaped Tha'lab's Kitab al-fasih in a part he called Fa'it al-fasih and commented it too; his many books include al-Bawaqit, al-Jurjani, al-Mawdih, al-Sa'at, Yawm wa-layla, al-Mustahsan, al-'Asharat, al-Shura, Tafsir asma' al-shu'ara', al-Qaba'il, al-Maknun and al-Maktum. 1

Transmission and state

He transmitted the strange and wild of the lexicon — it was said he dictated from memory thirty thousand folios of lugha, and for this abundance he was accused of fabrication; yet in hadith-transmission people believed and trusted him. His devotion to learning barred him earning a living, so he remained in want. 1
