Muwatta 2007

Summary

Malik transmits from Zayd ibn Aslam, from his father, that he said: Abdullah and Ubaydullah, the two sons of Umar ibn al-Khattab (may God be pleased with him), went out with an army to Iraq. When they returned, they passed by Abu Musa al-Ashari (may God be pleased with him), governor of Basra, who welcomed them warmly and said: if I could have done something more useful for you, I would have. He then said: there is money of God's money here, which I want to send to the Commander of the Believers. I will advance it to you; buy goods of Iraq with it, and sell them in Medina, and pay the capital to the Commander of the Believers, and the profit will be yours. They said: we would like that. He did it, and wrote to Umar ibn al-Khattab to take the money from them. When they arrived, they sold and made a profit. When they handed it to Umar, he said: did every soldier in the army get such an advance as you did? They said no. Umar said: you are the sons of the Commander of the Believers, so I advanced it to you; pay the money and its profit. Abdullah was silent, but Ubaydullah said: this is not right for you, Commander of the Believers; if the money had diminished or been lost, we would have guaranteed it. Umar said: pay it. Abdullah was silent, and Ubaydullah kept arguing. A man sitting with Umar said: Commander of the Believers, if you made it a profit-sharing arrangement. Umar said: I have made it one. Umar took back the capital and half the profit, and Abdullah and Ubaydullah took half the profit. 1
