Overview

Ubayd Allah ibn Umar ibn al-Khattab. After his father was killed, Hurmuzan was accused of sitting with Abu Lu'lu'a in planning the killing of Umar. Ubayd Allah said to him: "Come, let us go and look at a horse of mine", and struck him with the sword while he was unaware, and killed him 1.

He was at Siffin in the line of Mu'awiya. al-Mas'udi reports several sayings about his death: he was killed by Hurayth ibn Jabir al-Ju'fi, it is said by al-Ashtar, and it is said by Ali himself 2.

His entry in al-Isaba

He is Ubayd Allah ibn Umar ibn al-Khattab, Qurashi Adawi; his mother was Umm Kulthum bint Jarwal al-Khuza'iyya, and he was the maternal brother of the well-known Companion Haritha ibn Wahb; he was born in the Prophet ﷺ's lifetime 3. After his father's killing he went to Jufayna, who was a Christian, and killed him, then went to Abu Lu'lu'a's small daughter and killed her, and Medina darkened over its people for three days, until Uthman ibn Affan (may God be pleased with him) seized him by the forelock and the people parted them 4.

The qirad story

Malik narrates in al-Muwatta from Zayd ibn Aslam from his father that Abd Allah and Ubayd Allah, the sons of Umar, went out in an army to Iraq; Abu Musa al-Ash'ari advanced them money to trade with and profit, and wrote to Umar about it. When they came before Umar he ordered them to repay the money and the profit; Ubayd Allah argued with him until Umar made it a qirad partnership, so they took half the profit — its chain is sound in Ibn Hajar's judgement 3.

For younger visitors

Ubayd Allah ibn Umar was the son of the caliph Umar ibn al-Khattab, born in the Prophet's time. After his father was killed he killed Jufayna and Abu Lu'lu'a's daughter, until Uthman stopped him; later he was at Siffin 5.

  • On his death: several reports in al-Mas'udi (Hurayth ibn Jabir, al-Ashtar, Ali); the Isaba entry does not settle it.

Umar ibn al-Khattab

Second caliph (634–644); under his rule the early community conquered Syria, Egypt and much of the Sasanian Empire. Remembered in Sunni tradition as al-Faruq, the model of just rule.
