Summary
Yahya transmits from Malik, from Ibn Shihab, from Malik ibn Aws ibn al-Hadathan al-Nasri, that he sought an exchange for a hundred dinars. He said: Talha ibn Ubayd Allah called me, and we bargained until he exchanged them with me. He turned the gold in his hand, then said: wait until my treasurer comes to me from al-Ghaba, while Umar ibn al-Khattab (may God be pleased with him) was listening. Umar said: by God, do not leave him until you take from him. Then he said: the Messenger said: gold for silver is riba unless hand to hand; wheat for wheat is riba unless hand to hand; dates for dates is riba unless hand to hand; barley for barley is riba unless hand to hand. The editor notes that Malik, Mamar, al-Layth and Ibn Uyayna transmitted from al-Zuhri gold for silver, not gold for gold. 1
