Summary

A report that Malik transmits from Nafi' from Sulayman ibn Yasar from Umm Salama, the Prophet ﷺ's wife, in the chapter on the woman with irregular bleeding: a woman whose blood flowed in the Prophet's time asked Umm Salama for a ruling. She told her to count the nights and days she used to menstruate in the month before what happened to her, and leave off prayer for that period. When she exceeded it, she should bathe, bind herself with a cloth, and pray. The editor cites Abu Dawud, al-Nasa'i, Ahmad, al-Shafi'i and al-Bayhaqi, and notes Ibn Abd al-Barr's view that Ayyub transmitted it from Sulayman as Malik did from Nafi', while al-Layth, Sakhr ibn Juwayriyya and Ubayd Allah ibn Umar inserted a man between Sulayman and Umm Salama. The editor holds that Sulayman did not hear from Umm Salama, so the Muwatta version is broken, and the connected version with the unnamed man is in al-Darimi and Abu Dawud. 1
