Overview
Al-Baladhuri relates from Musa ibn Talha that Uthman ibn Affan was the first to grant lands in Iraq as fiefs, from the properties of Khosrow and the land of the exiles. 1
Those granted
- Talha: al-Nashastaj.
- Khabbab ibn al-Aratt: Isbina, and Sa'bana was also mentioned to him.
- Jarir ibn Abd Allah al-Bajali: land on the bank of the Euphrates.
- Abd Allah ibn Mas'ud: land in al-Nahrayn.
- Ammar ibn Yasir: Isbina.
- Khalid ibn Urfuta: land by the bath of A'yan.
- Usama ibn Zayd: land which he sold.
- The report also names Wa'il ibn Hujr, Adi ibn Hatim, al-Ash'ath ibn Qays and Sa'd. 1
The report names Isbina for both Ammar and Khabbab, and al-Nashastaj repeats for Talha. This is a difference in the report and it is not settled here.
Ibn Mas'ud and Sa'd used to give their lands to be worked for a third and a quarter. 1
The date falls in the caliphate of Uthman (24–35 AH), and the conversion is derived.
