مدرسة الحياة (شرح صيد الخاطر)

A Ramadan lesson series by Abu Ishaq al-Heweny explaining reflections from Ibn al-Jawzi's Sayd al-Khatir, of which the Assabile archive keeps twelve video episodes (episode 7 repeats episode 4): misunderstanding God and His Messenger and the story of Hatib's letter; the reality of beneficial knowledge, Laylat al-Qadr, Sila ibn Ashyam and Khubayb; the friends of God, Julaybib (may God be pleased with him), the death of Sufyan al-Thawri and guarding one's time; perspicacity; and pride and dress. Filed with them in the archive are a lesson on the hadith of the migration to Abyssinia, one from the Book of Knowledge of Sahih al-Bukhari, one on the men of the cave and al-Zubayr's debt, one on evasion, and two parts of lectures on hearing and obeying.

Summary

"Madrasat al-Hayat" (The School of Life) is the title Abu Ishaq al-Heweny gave to his commentary on Sayd al-Khatir by Ibn al-Jawzi. He opened it every Ramadan, choosing one reflection (khatira) from the book, reading it, explaining it, and moving from it into hadith, the Sira and the lives of scholars. ¹ ² ³ The Assabile archive keeps twelve video episodes under this title, each between about fifty and seventy-eight minutes long, given by al-Heweny in the mosque before his audience; in one of them he says that some people regard this mosque of his, among the mosques of Kafr el-Sheikh, as they would the Sacred Mosque. ⁴

Not every episode belongs to the Sayd al-Khatir commentary. Episode 2 is a lesson on Umm Salama's hadith of the migration to Abyssinia, ⁵ episode 6 a lesson from the Book of Knowledge of Sahih al-Bukhari, ⁶ episodes 11 and 12 two parts of another lecture series on hearing and obeying, ⁷ ⁸ and episode 7 repeats the recording of episode 4. ⁹ Some episodes are dated by al-Heweny himself: episode 3 on the night of 27 Ramadan 1432, and episode 10 on Wednesday 3 Ramadan, in August 2011. ¹⁰ ¹¹ ¹² The archive's pages give no recording dates.

The episodes

Episode 1: Misunderstanding God and His Messenger. He opens the season by presenting Ibn al-Jawzi as a preacher to the common people and comparing his book with Ibn al-Qayyim's al-Fawa'id, then reads a reflection in which Ibn al-Jawzi seeks refuge from misunderstanding, above all among those who claim knowledge, and illustrates it with a saying of Abu Abd al-Rahman al-Sulami about the hadith of the people of Badr. ¹³ ¹⁴ He gives al-Sulami's biography, tells the story of Hatib's letter in full, and then disagrees with Ibn al-Jawzi on the hadith's meaning. ¹⁵ ¹⁶ ¹⁷ He draws on Uthman's equipping of the Army of Hardship, ¹⁸ on the dream and humility of Abd Allah ibn Salam, ¹⁹ ²⁰ and on Umar's fear of God, ²¹ and closes on the unnamed narrator in al-Bukhari's chains and how he is identified, and on al-Suyuti's remark in the introduction to Tadrib al-Rawi that hadith science is mastered only by the most skilled. ²² ²³ ²⁴

Episode 2: Umm Salama's hadith of the migration to Abyssinia. He returns to a hadith he had explained years before, which he calls established, narrated by Ibn Ishaq in the Sira and by Ahmad in the Musnad: the Quraysh embassy to the Negus, the speech of Ja'far ibn Abi Talib, the Negus's return of the gifts, and al-Zubayr's crossing of the Nile. ⁵ ²⁵ ²⁶ ²⁷ He then describes the state of the Arabs at the coming of the message through the words of al-Miqdad in al-Adab al-Mufrad and of al-Mughira ibn Shu'ba in al-Bukhari, ²⁸ ²⁹ cites Jabir's hadith that the Prophet ﷺ spent ten years following people to their camps and markets, asking who would shelter and support him, and tells of the pledge of al-Aqaba and the warning of As'ad ibn Zurara, the youngest of the seventy. ³⁰ ³¹ ³² He ends with the conversion of Amr ibn al-As at the hand of the Negus. ³³

Episode 3: The reality of beneficial knowledge. On the night of 27 Ramadan he begins with Laylat al-Qadr, then reads Ibn al-Jawzi's reflection on scholars who indulge in legal licences and on the worshipper who presumes upon his deeds before God; he says this is the ninth lesson on this reflection. ³⁴ ¹⁰ ³⁵ ³⁶ He digresses on God's blessings in the body, drawing on what doctors taught him during his treatment, ³⁷ then gives the biography of Sila ibn Ashyam with his miracle and the story of the lion, and tells the story of Khubayb ibn Adi. ³⁸ ³⁹ ⁴⁰

Episode 4 (repeated as episode 7): On the friends of God. He reads Ibn al-Jawzi's description of those God chooses for His friendship, defines the wali, and disagrees with Ibn al-Jawzi that beauty of form is a condition, citing the stories of Julaybib and of Zahir; he then speaks of the friends of God's fear of a bad end and of the death of Sufyan al-Thawri. ³ ⁴¹ ⁴² ⁴³ ⁴⁴ He turns to guarding one's time: al-Bukhari, who woke seventeen times in one night to write the chapter headings of his Sahih, as his student Muhammad ibn Abi Hatim al-Warraq reports, and who began seeking hadith only at eleven; Ibn Aqil and his book al-Funun; and he ends with Ibn Abbas's hadith on health and free time, with which al-Bukhari opens the Book of Softening Hearts. ⁴⁵ ⁴⁶ ⁴⁷ ⁴⁸

Episode 5: The third man of the cave. He completes the hadith of the three men shut in by the rock and reaches the man whose labourer's wage he invested; he says the two Shaykhs narrate it only from Ibn Umar, and that Ali, al-Nu'man ibn Bashir, Abu Hurayra (may God be pleased with him), Uqba ibn Amir and Abd Allah ibn Abi Awfa narrate it with additions. ⁴⁹ ⁵⁰ ⁵¹ He draws from it that one who holds another's money may invest it if he is confident of profit, ⁵² and moves on to the story of al-Zubayr's debt, ⁵³ to Ibn Taymiyya's saying that it is recommended to leave a recommended act in order to bring hearts together, which he reads as a temporary leaving, ⁵⁴ to Abu Hamza al-Sukkari, Muhammad ibn Maymun, and the neighbour who priced his nearness at two thousand, ⁵⁵ and to A'isha's vow not to speak to her sister's son Abd Allah ibn al-Zubayr and its expiation with forty slaves freed. ⁵⁶ ⁵⁷ He presents the hadith as an answer to Ibn al-Jawzi, who made light of those three men's deeds, and asks his audience: if you were the fourth, which deed would you plead? ⁵⁸ ⁵⁹

Episode 6: From the Book of Knowledge of Sahih al-Bukhari. He explains the chapter "whoever is asked about knowledge while busy speaking, finishes what he is saying and then answers the questioner", sets out his seven-point method for explaining a hadith, and the kinds of al-Bukhari's chapter headings and their three pillars, ⁶⁰ ⁶¹ ⁶² tacit approval, the hadith of Khuzayma ibn Thabit and Jabir's camel, ⁶³ ⁶⁴ and then Abu Hurayra's hadith of the Bedouin who asked about the Hour and the loss of trust. ⁶⁵ From the chain he draws lessons on the forms of transmission and their abbreviations, the letter of switching between chains, the difference between al-Bukhari's craft and Muslim's, high and low chains and the three-man chains, and a son's narration from his father. ⁶⁶ ⁶⁷ ⁶⁸ ⁶⁹ ⁷⁰

Episode 8: Evasion (al-hayda). He defines hayda in the language as swerving from the path and divides it into evasion used to disparage in the criticism of narrators, evasion to escape answering out of scruple, as when Yahya ibn Ma'in was asked by a woman about a hen that died in a well, and evasion by way of fallacy. ⁷¹ ⁷² ⁷³ ⁷⁴ His example of the last is Pharaoh in his exchange with Moses as told in Surat al-Shu'ara', ⁷⁵ al-Shu'ara' 23, and he pauses on Pharaoh's first word, "what", which is used for things without reason. ⁷⁶ He draws two lessons: a caller to God does not spend his time defending his own honour, for the Prophet was called mad, a sorcerer, a poet and a soothsayer and never stopped to say he was not mad; and a caller needs alternative plans, as armies prepare a plan for victory and a plan for defeat. ⁷⁷ ⁷⁸ ⁷⁹ He then speaks at length about Egypt's modern wars and about his own experience of restrictions. ⁸⁰ ⁸¹

Episode 9: The blessing of perspicacity. He says that the previous Ramadan he gave eight lectures on the reflection "Nafthat masdur" and four remain, then takes a short reflection on how the intelligent man escapes a predicament while the heedless man harms himself, with Joseph's brothers as the example. ⁸² ⁸³ He speaks of firasa: whether it is innate or acquired, al-Shafi'i's saying that he learned it before jurisprudence, and the need of muftis and judges for it, then gives examples from Solomon, Iyas ibn Mu'awiya, Yahya ibn Aktham, al-Hajjaj and Wahshi. ⁸⁴ ⁸⁵ ⁸⁶ ⁸⁷ ⁸⁸

Episode 10: Clothes and adornment that breed self-admiration. He reads Ibn al-Jawzi's examples and says Ibn al-Jawzi spoke too generally, since what corrupts one soul may set another right; he grades the ring hadith sound and gives the sources of the hadith of the man swallowed by the earth as he strutted. ⁸⁹ ⁹⁰ ⁹¹ ⁹² He then speaks at length on trailing the garment and on kibr, judges the report of A'isha's garment false, and tells the hadith of the patterned cloak the Prophet sent back to Abu Jahm, from which he draws that one may accept a gift returned to him but may not take back a gift. ⁹³ ⁹⁴ ⁹⁵ ⁹⁶ ⁹⁷ He explains the prohibition of silk by its softness and luxury, not its price, since pure wool may cost more than silk and diamonds more than gold, and both are permitted. ⁹⁸

Episode 11: Hearing and obeying (part two). He opens with the words of one pledging to the Prophet that he pledges to hear and obey in what is pleasant and what is disliked, and says that abandoning this "law" is the community's one disease. ⁹⁹ ¹⁰⁰ He narrates from Sahih Muslim, from Abu Hurayra, that the Companions fell to their knees when the end of Surat al-Baqara was revealed, al-Baqara 284, and that when they said "we hear and obey" the verse of relief came down, al-Baqara 286. ¹⁰¹ ¹⁰² His examples include Ukkasha ibn Mihsan; Abu Hurayra's prayer for knowledge that is not forgotten, which he says al-Nasa'i narrates in al-Sunan al-Kubra with a good chain; Abu Mas'ud al-Badri, who dropped the whip and freed his slave; and Mu'awiya ibn al-Hakam al-Sulami, whom the Prophet taught gently. ¹⁰³ ¹⁰⁴ ¹⁰⁵ ¹⁰⁶ ¹⁰⁷ He ends by taking the hadith of the slave girl as proof that a solitary report is authoritative in matters of creed. ¹⁰⁸

Episode 12: Hearing and obeying (part three). He opens with the cry "Wa Mu'tasimah", the campaign against Amorium and Abu Tammam's ode, then with Hafiz Ibrahim's verses from Mustafa Kamil's campaign to found the National University. ¹⁰⁹ ¹¹⁰ ¹¹¹ He says all the community's ills come down to one word, explains the meaning of the two testimonies as "nothing is worshipped by right but God, and no one is followed by right but the Messenger", and gives Sufyan ibn Uyayna's saying that the Messenger is the great scale. ¹¹² ¹¹³ ¹¹⁴ He then gives three descriptions of the Jahiliyya by Ja'far, al-Mughira and al-Miqdad, and notes that whatever al-Bukhari narrates outside the Sahih must be cited with its grading. ¹¹⁵ ¹¹⁶ Among his examples of stopping at the Prophet's word are Imran ibn Husayn and Bushayr ibn Ka'b on modesty, Ibn Umar and his son Bilal on women going to the mosques, and Abd Allah ibn Mughaffal on flicking pebbles, ¹¹⁷ ¹¹⁸ ¹¹⁹ and he says the saying "what is taken by the sword of shyness is unlawful" is not a hadith, and that he found no chain for it. ¹²⁰ He ends with the story of Abu al-Yusr and his debtor, and with an urjuza by Muhammad ibn Sa'id al-Hanafi, one of the later Hanafi shaykhs of Medina as he describes him, on the four imams' instructions that their words not be put before the Prophet's. ¹²¹ ¹²²

What was left out

Left out of these episodes: what did not read clearly in the transcript (among it the year of episode 1 and the sale figures of al-Zubayr's property), political opinions and attacks on living people by name, and the practical rulings he gives in passing. The details are in the lane's progress file.
