Overview

Abu al-Wafa' Ali ibn Aqil al-Baghdadi, shaykh of the Hanbalis. Al-Suyuti relates that he washed the caliph al-Mustazhir when he died in 512 AH. 1

Repentance

He had studied kalam according to the Mu'tazili doctrine. When al-Sharif Abu Ja'far and other shaykhs objected to what they found in his own hand in the books about the doctrines of innovators, he wrote on the tenth of Muharram 465 AH a deed of repentance, in which he disowned the doctrines of the innovators, the Mu'tazila, and the company of their adherents. 2

Ibn al-Jawzi says that a large number of witnesses testified to this. 2
