Overview

Abu Muhammad al-Husayn ibn Muhammad ibn al-Farra al-Baghawi, a hadith scholar and jurist from the town of Bagh in Khurasan, between Merv and Herat. Among his works is "Sharh al-Sunna". The encyclopaedia gives his birth as 436 AH and his death as 510 AH. 1

What Shadharat al-Dhahab says

Shadharat al-Dhahab says that he died in 516 AH in Merv al-Rudh in Shawwal, and was buried beside his teacher, the judge Husayn. It describes him as a noble, ascetic and content man. It relays from Ibn al-Ahdal that his works include "Ma'alim al-Tanzil", "al-Jam' bayn al-Sahihayn" and "al-Masabih", and in jurisprudence "al-Tahdhib" and "Sharh al-Sunna". It says he would not give a lesson except in a state of ritual purity. It relays from al-Subki that he never saw him choose anything without finding on examination that it was stronger than the alternatives. 2

The year of death differs between the encyclopaedia (510 AH) and the Shadharat (516 AH), and the question needs an additional source.
