Summary

Umm Hani bint Abi Talib ibn Abd al-Muttalib, the Prophet's cousin; it is said her name was Fakhita, or Fatima, or Hind — the first is best known 1.

Her marriage

She was wife of Hubayra ibn Amr al-Makhzumi 1. Ibn al-Kalbi relates from Ibn Abbas that the Prophet asked Abu Talib for her hand, and Hubayra also asked, so Abu Talib married her to him — then Islam parted them 2. In Ibn Sa'd's account, with a sound chain from al-Sha'bi, she made excuse when the Prophet asked for her, fearing she would fail a husband's rights; in another account she said: "I am a woman with small children, and I would not have them harm you" 2. In al-Suddi's account she was not of the emigrant women and so was not lawful to him — in that connection al-Ahzab 50 is cited 2.

The conquest day

Abu Umar says Hubayra fled to Najran when Mecca was conquered, and spoke a poem apologising for his flight; when it reached him that Umm Hani had become Muslim he spoke verses on her 2. She had Amr by him — by whom she took her kunya — Hubayra and others 2.

Narration

Umm Hani related hadiths from the Prophet in the Six Books and others; from her related her son Ja'da, her grandson Harun, her two clients Abu Murra and Abu Salih, her cousin Abdullah ibn Abbas and others 2. Al-Tirmidhi and others mention that she outlived Ali 2.
