Overview

Salit ibn Qays ibn Amr al-Ansari, sent by Umar with Abu Ubayd to Iraq. al-Baladhuri reports that Umar said to him: "Were it not for a haste in you, I would have appointed you. But war is a cruel thing, and only a steady man is fit for it" 1.

The Battle of the Bridge

On the day of the Bridge, he told Abu Ubayd that he had forbidden him to cut the bridge to the enemy. He advised him to withdraw, and to write to the Commander of the Faithful asking for reinforcements, but Abu Ubayd refused. Salit fought until he was killed 1.

His death is reported at the end of Ramadan of the year 13 AH. This date rests on al-Baladhuri alone (pp.351-352), and it needs an additional source.
