Urwa ibn Zayd al-Khayl al-Ta'i

عروة بن زيد الخيل الطائي

Urwa ibn Zayd al-Khayl (may God be pleased with him) al-Ta'i; in al-Baladhuri sent by Abu Ubayd to al-Zawabi whose dihqan he pacified on Barusma's terms; at the Bridge he fought a fight worth a company's and carried al-Muthanna's report to Umar. Sent by Ammar at Umar's command to Rayy and Dastaba with eight thousand — victorious over Daylam and Rayy's host — he bore the news to Umar himself and was named al-Bashir, he who once carried the Bridge's tidings.

Overview

Urwa ibn Zayd al-Khayl al-Tai, a commander whom al-Baladhuri mentions in his accounts of the conquest of Iraq and the lands of Rayy 1.

In Iraq

Abu Ubayd sent him to al-Zawabi, and he made peace with its landholder on the same terms as the peace of Barusma. He fought fiercely on the day of the Bridge, and al-Baladhuri says that he was equal to the fighting of a group of men. al-Muthanna wrote to Umar with the news in his company 1.

In Rayy

Umar sent him, by the order of Ammar, to Rayy and Dastaba with eight thousand men, two months after Nahawand. He prevailed over the hosts of the Daylam and the people of Rayy. He then left his brother Handhala in his place and came to Umar with the good news, and Umar named him "the bearer of good tidings" 1.
