Overview
Rukn al-Din al-Amidi, Abu Hamid Muhammad b. Muhammad al-Samarkandi, was a Hanafi lawyer whose chief merit lay in dialectics. He died at Bukhara on 9 Jumada II 615/3 September 1218. 2
Works
He treated dialectics in his al-Irshad and in al-Tariqa al-'Amidiyya fi l-khilaf wa l-jadal, which survives in manuscript. 2
The Yoga translation
His name is connected with the translation of an Indian work on yoga, called Amplakunda in the article. An Arabic version exists under the title Mir'at al-ma'ani li-idrak al-'alam al-insani, published in 1928 from five manuscripts. The preface tells of a Brahman yogi who came from Kamrup to Lakhnawti under 'Ala' al-Din 'Ali b. Mardan (about 605/1208), was converted by Rukn al-Din, and taught him yoga. The article notes that this account does not clarify al-'Amidi's share in the translation. 1
