Summary

Jubayr ibn Mut'im ibn Adi ibn Nawfal ibn Abd Manaf al-Qurashi al-Nawfali; he was among Quraysh's grandees and genealogists 1.

Ransoming the captives of Badr

He came to the Prophet over the ransom of the captives of Badr and heard him recite Surat al-Tur — he said: "that was the first faith that entered my heart". Bukhari related it in the Sahih, and the Prophet told him: "were your father alive and spoke to me for them, I would have given them to him" 1.

His Islam

He became Muslim between Hudaybiyya and the conquest — or it is said: at the conquest. Al-Baghawi said he became Muslim before Mecca's conquest 1.

Genealogy

Ibn Ishaq mentions that when Umar was given al-Nu'man's lineage he called for Jubayr ibn Mut'im, who was the most knowing of Quraysh in the genealogies of Quraysh and the Arabs. Jubayr said: "I took genealogy from Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may God be pleased with him), and Abu Bakr was the most knowing of the Arabs in genealogy" 1.

His claim in the division

Sa'id ibn al-Musayyab relates that he and Uthman came to the Prophet and asked him to divide for them as he had divided for Banu Hashim and al-Muttalib — their kinship being one — but he refused, saying: "Banu Hashim and Banu al-Muttalib are one thing" 2.

His death

He died in Mu'awiya's caliphate, in year fifty-seven, fifty-eight or fifty-nine 2.
