Overview

Jabir ibn Abdallah ibn Riab al-Ansari al-Sulami, "one of the six who witnessed the First Pledge of al-Aqaba". 1 He is not Jabir ibn Abdallah ibn Amr ibn Haram, the well-known Companion and transmitter.

Al-Aqaba and Badr

Ibn Ishaq relates from elders of the people of Asim ibn Umar ibn Qatada that when the Prophet ﷺ met the six of the Ansar, they were As'ad ibn Zurara, Jabir ibn Abdallah ibn Riab, Qutba ibn Amir, Rafi' ibn Malik, Uqba ibn Amir ibn Zayd and Awf ibn Malik, and they embraced Islam. 1 Musa ibn Uqba relays from Ibn Shihab, and Abu al-Aswad from Urwa, that he was among those who witnessed Badr. 1

Transmissions

Ibn Abd al-Barr says that he has a hadith in al-Kalbi's version, from Abu Salih, from him, and that he knows no other. Ibn Hajar adds: "Indeed, hadiths have come from Jabir ibn Abdallah ibn Riab by weak chains," and al-Baghawi and Ibn al-Sakan narrate through al-Waza' ibn Nafi' the hadith of the passing of Mikha'il; al-Baghawi says al-Waza' is very weak. 1 Al-Bukhari in al-Tarikh relates, through Ibn Ishaq, from al-Kalbi, from Abu Salih, from Jabir ibn Riab, the story of Abu Yasir ibn Akhtab; Yunus ibn Bukayr relates it in al-Maghazi from Ibn Abbas and Jabir ibn Riab, "as if he had ascribed Jabir to his grandfather". 1

Uqba ibn Amir ibn Nabi

An Ansari of Banu Salima, he was at the first al-Aqaba, Badr and Uhud, where he was marked by a green band on his helmet, and at the Trench and the other campaigns, and was killed at al-Yamama; Ibn Hajar thinks he is a different man from Uqba ibn Amir al-Sulami who brought his son to the Prophet, though Ibn al-Athir joined them.
