رافع بن مالك بن العجلان

An Ansari of Banu Zurayq, he was at al-Aqaba and one of the naqibs, and Sa'd ibn Abd al-Hamid said he was the first of the Khazraj to embrace Islam; it is reported he was the first to bring the sura of Yusuf to Medina and that the mosque of Banu Zurayq was the first in which the Qur'an was recited; whether he was at Badr is disputed.

Overview

Rafi' ibn Malik ibn al-Ajlan al-Zuraqi al-Ansari, "who witnessed al-Aqaba and was one of the chiefs (nuqaba')" 1. Sa'd ibn Abd al-Hamid ibn Ja'far said: he was the first of the Khazraj to become Muslim 1.

The Qur'an in Medina

Ibn Ishaq relates that he was the first to come to Medina with Surat Yusuf 1. al-Zubayr ibn Bakkar, in his reports on Medina, relates that the mosque of Banu Zurayq was the first mosque in which the Qur'an was recited. When Rafi' met the Prophet ﷺ at al-Aqaba, he gave him what had been revealed in the preceding ten years. Rafi' then came to Medina with it, gathered his people and recited it to them, and the Prophet marvelled at the proper orientation of the mosque's qibla 1.

Did he witness Badr?

al-Bukhari relates from Mu'adh ibn Rifa'a that his father Rifa'a was of the people of Badr and that Rafi' was of the people of al-Aqaba. Rafi' used to say to his son: "It does not please me that I witnessed Badr instead of al-Aqaba" 1. Abu Nu'aym relates the same report, and Musa ibn Uqba joined it and named him among the people of Badr. From Ibn Ishaq it also comes through Yunus ibn Bukayr, not through Yazid al-Bakka'i 1.

What Ibn Hajar pointed out

al-Hakim, in the Mustadrak, included in his entry the hadith of Mu'adh ibn Rifa'a from his grandfather Rafi'. Ibn Hajar said: "This is a mistake; it is from his father" 1.
