His entry in al-Isaba

Ibn Hajar gives him a short entry in al-Isaba under number 163 as "Asad ibn Zurara", then notes that the correct form of his name is "As'ad ibn Zurara", as Abu Musa al-Madini had pointed out 1. The entry thus corrects the vocalisation of his name more than it reports his biography, which is preserved in the sira works as above.

For younger visitors

As'ad ibn Zurara was among the first people of Medina to accept Islam; he met the Prophet ﷺ at Mecca before the Hijra and pledged to him, then stood behind Mus'ab ibn Umayr when the Prophet sent him to Medina as a teacher 2.

Notes for researchers

  • al-Isaba fi Tamyiz al-Sahaba, entry 163 (al-Maktaba al-Asriyya scan, p. 46); the entry is a name-vocalisation correction, not a full biography.
