In brief

Humayd al-Tawil, Abu Ubayda al-Khuza'i — other nasabs are given — of Basra; his father's name is reported in nearly ten forms, among them Taybar, Thawriyya, Zadhwan, Markhan, Mihran, Abd al-Rahman, and Mukhallad. He was called "the Tall" though not especially so: a neighbour named Humayd al-Qasir ("the Short") made the surname needed to tell them apart — or it is said his arms were so long that standing by a house one hand reached his head and the other his feet. 1

His hearing from Anas

He narrated from Anas b. Malik, Thabit al-Bunani, Musa b. Anas, Bukayr b. Abdallah al-Muzani, Ishaq b. Abdallah b. al-Harith b. Nawfal, al-Hasan al-Basri, Ibn Abi Mulayka, Abdallah b. Shaqiq, Abu al-Mutawakkil al-Naji, and others; narrating from him were his nephew Hammad b. Salama, his contemporary Yahya b. Sa'id al-Ansari, Hammad b. Zayd, the two Sufyans, Shu'ba, Malik, Ibn Ishaq, Wahb b. Khalid, al-Qattan, Za'ida, Zuhayr, Jarir b. Hazim, Sulayman b. Bilal, Yazid b. Harun, Abdallah b. Bakr al-Sahmi, Muhammad b. Abdallah al-Ansari, Quraysh b. Anas, and more. It was said the bulk of his reports from Anas he actually heard from Thabit — Abu Ubayda al-Haddad reports Shu'ba saying Humayd heard only fifteen hadiths from Anas and took the rest from Thabit, whom he inserts in the chains; Ibn Ma'in, al-Ijli, Abu Hatim, Ibn Khirash, and al-Nasa'i all declared him reliable. 2

His death

Ibn Sa'd and a group dated him to 142 AH, while Ibrahim b. Humayd al-Tawil says he died in 143 AH past the age of seventy-five. 3
