Anas ibn al-Nadr al-Ansari

أنس بن النضر الأنصاري الخزرجي

An Ansari Companion of the Khazraj, uncle of Anas ibn Malik (may God be pleased with him) the Prophet ﷺ's servant. He missed the fighting at Badr and longed for martyrdom in the next battle. At Uhud, when the Muslims scattered and some said the Messenger had been killed, he urged the falterers on, saying: 'what will you do with life after him?' He went on fighting until he met Sa'd ibn Mu'adh and said: 'alas for the breeze of Paradise, Sa'd — I catch it below Uhud!' He fought until he was killed; more than eighty wounds were found on him — spear-thrusts, sword-blows and arrow-shots — and his sister knew him only by his fingertips 1.

Overview

Anas ibn al-Nadr al-Ansari al-Khazraji, one of the steadfast fighters at the battle of Uhud, and known for his stand when the Muslims were thrown into confusion by the report that the Prophet had been killed. 2

His stand at Uhud

When the morale of some Muslims collapsed and some said the Prophet had been killed, Anas ibn al-Nadr passed by them as they had laid down their arms. He said: "What will you do with life after him? Stand up and die as the Messenger of God died." 1

Notes for researchers

  • The date of his death and the place of his martyrdom are not yet read in the local sources, so they are not set out here.
  • The report is from "Al-Rahiq al-Makhtum", which refers in it to the hadiths of al-Bukhari; we have not yet compared it with the text of al-Bukhari itself.

Abd Allah ibn Jubayr ibn al-Numan al-Ansari

An Ansari Companion of the Aws who fought at Badr. The Prophet appointed him commander of the fifty-archer detachment at Uhud and charged them not to leave their position on the hill in victory or defeat. When most of his men left seeking spoils, he held firm with nine others on the hill. He was killed by Khalid ibn al-Walid and his cavalry when they executed the flanking manoeuvre. He was a Badri, which is a high honour.
