Overview

Al-Malik al-Salih Najm al-Din Ayyub ibn al-Kamil, an Ayyubid sultan of Egypt. He took it after his brother al-Adil when he was deposed 1.

According to al-Maqrizi

Al-Maqrizi says that al-Malik al-Salih founded al-Salihiyya at the edge of the sands between Egypt and Syria in 644 AH, and built palaces, a mosque and a market there, so that the armies would have a camp when they came out of the desert 2.

He says that he built the citadel of al-Rawda and moved into it from the Citadel, and that he endowed the al-Salihiyya madrasas between the two palaces in Cairo, with four teaching posts for the Shafi'i, Hanafi, Maliki and Hanbali schools 3.

He says that the Franks landed at Damietta in Safar 647 AH, and that he died at al-Mansura, facing them, on Sunday, 14 Sha'ban. His wife Shajar al-Durr, mother of his son Khalil, concealed his death and summoned his son Turan Shah 3.

According to al-Suyuti and Ibn al-Imad

Al-Suyuti says that he died on the night of mid-Sha'ban 647 AH while the Franks had taken Damietta, and that his concubine Shajar al-Durr hid his death 1.

Ibn al-Imad adds that he was at al-Mansura and was angry with its people for leaving Damietta, until he hanged sixty of their notables, and that his death was kept secret for days until his son al-Mu'azzam Turan Shah arrived 4.

Ibn al-Imad says he was born in 603 AH in Cairo, and that his father made him sultan of Amid, Harran, Sinjar and the fortress of Kifa. He describes him as of great dignity and majestic awe 4.

Al-Malik al-Ashraf takes Damascus from his nephew Dawud

On Monday, 2 Sha'ban 626, al-Malik al-Ashraf ibn al-Malik al-Adil took Damascus from his nephew Salah al-Din Dawud ibn al-Mu'azzam. Dawud had sought the help of his uncle al-Ashraf against his uncle al-Kamil, and al-Ashraf entered Damascus and swore to assist him; then al-Ashraf and al-Kamil reconciled. While Dawud and al-Ashraf were sitting in a tent, Izz al-Din Aybak, a mamluk of al-Mu'azzam and the greatest of the amirs, came in together with his son and told Dawud: «Get up and leave, the seizure is now», since he had been told that al-Ashraf meant to seize his companion. So he took Dawud out, and al-Ashraf could not prevent it, because Aybak had mounted all his army and they marched on Damascus. Al-Ashraf went and besieged the city until al-Kamil arrived, and the siege grew tight. The greatest hardship for Dawud was lack of money, because his wealth was at al-Karak and, trusting his uncle, he had brought none of it; he was obliged to sell the jewellery and clothing of his women. He went out to his uncle al-Kamil and offered to surrender Damascus on condition that al-Karak, the citadel of Shawbak, al-Ghawr, Nablus and those districts remain his, and that Aybak keep the citadel of Salkhad and its districts. Al-Kamil handed over Damascus and set his deputy in the citadel until his brother al-Ashraf handed over to him Harran, al-Ruha, al-Raqqa, Sarudj and Ras al-Ayn of al-Jazira; when he received them, he handed the citadel of Damascus to al-Ashraf.
