Overview
Al-Suyuti relates that the Franks took Damietta in 647 AH while the sultan al-Malik al-Salih was ill, and he died in mid-Sha'ban. His slave-girl Shajar al-Durr concealed his death and sent to his son Turanshah. 2
The killing of Turanshah
Turanshah was killed in Muharram 648 AH; his father's mamluks rose against him. They installed Shajar al-Durr, and the Turks swore allegiance to her and to her deputy Izz al-Din Aybak. 2
Afterwards
Izz al-Din established himself as sultan in Rabi al-Akhir and took the title al-Malik al-Mu'izz. Then the army swore allegiance to al-Malik al-Ashraf, who was eight years old, and Izz al-Din remained his atabeg. In 652 AH al-Mu'izz abolished the name of al-Ashraf and became independent. 2
