Encyclopaedia of Islam account

The unsigned Encyclopaedia of Islam (2nd ed.) entry names him Khuwaylid b. Khalid, a younger contemporary of the Prophet ﷺ and the foremost poet of the Hudhayl. The legend that he reached Medina the morning after the Prophet's death is treated as unreliable. The article thinks he went to Egypt under 'Umar and joined Ibn Abi Sarh's campaign into Ifriqiya in 26/647, and that he died on the road to Medina, where he was with 'Abd Allah b. al-Zubayr. It reports that he lost five sons to the plague in Egypt in one year. His odes were praised for their structure, and the article links his descriptions of wild honey and bees to his teacher Sa'ida b. Judayy. 2
