Abu Burqan

أبو برقان

Of the Banu Sa'd ibn Bakr and reckoned a foster-uncle of the Prophet ﷺ. The only report about him, on al-Hira, is weak in Ibn Hajar's assessment because its transmitter Isa ibn Yazid (Ibn Da'b) was accused of lying.

Overview

Abu Burqan al-Sa'di, "the Prophet's foster-uncle", of the Banu Sa'd ibn Bakr. 1 Al-Mustaghfiri mentions him, and Abu Musa relates his report. 1 His mention is connected with the family of Halima al-Sa'diyya, the Prophet's wet-nurse.

The report

It is related that he came in to the Prophet and said that no youth of his people was dearer to him than he, nor better in praise. The Prophet asked him: "Do you know al-Hira?" He said yes. The Prophet said that if your life is long you will hear that the one who comes from it comes without an escort. Abu Burqan (may God be pleased with him) said: "I do not know what you are saying." The Prophet said that he would take his hand on the Day of Resurrection and remind him of this. Uthman used to say to him: "He would only take you if you were a righteous man." Abu Burqan said: "I came to al-Hira and found it as you described it to me." 1

Assessment of the report

Ibn Hajar comments that Isa ibn Yazid, the transmitter of the report, is the one known as Ibn Da'b the narrator, "and they have called him a liar", 2 and that this kunya was corrupted. 2 Therefore no lineage or event is to be built on the report without another chain.
