Chain of transmission
Summary
The first hadith in the chapter on making up voluntary fasts. Malik transmits from Ibn Shihab that Aisha and Hafsa, wives of the Prophet ﷺ, woke up fasting voluntarily; food was given to them as a gift, and they broke their fast on it. The Prophet came in, and Hafsa, who was her father's daughter, said: Messenger of God, we woke up fasting voluntarily, and food was given to us as a gift, and we broke our fast on it. He said: make up a day in its place. The editor notes that Malik transmitted it as a cut-off report (mursal, between Ibn Shihab and Aisha and Hafsa); that the sound and preserved version is the cut-off one, as held by Abu Zur'a and Abu Hatim; that some of al-Zuhri's students transmitted the connected version from Urwa from Aisha; and refers to al-Tirmidhi (735) and al-Tamhid (12/66). 1
