Summary

Malik transmits from Abu Hazim ibn Dinar, from Abu Idris al-Khawlani, who said: I entered the mosque of Damascus and found a bright young man with radiant front teeth; whenever people disagreed about something they referred to him and acted on his word. I asked about him and was told: this is Muadh ibn Jabal. The next day I came early and found that he had come even earlier and was praying. I waited until he finished his prayer, then went to him, greeted him, and said: by God, I love you for God's sake. He said: for God? I said: for God. He took the fold of my cloak and pulled me to him, and said: rejoice, for I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: God, blessed and exalted, said: My love is due to those who love each other for My sake, who sit together for My sake, who visit each other for My sake, and who give to each other for My sake. 1
