Overview
Abu Idris al-Khawlani, a Syrian jurist. The book "The Umayyad State" by al-Salabi says that he was among the judges of Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan and took the judgeship in 74 AH. 1
Judgeship and grievances
He also had the hearing of grievances (mazalim), then Abd al-Malik relieved him of them at his request. He used to conduct that hearing on the caliph's commission, the caliph himself sitting for grievances. 2
His standing in Syria
The book says that he was the scholar of Syria after Abu al-Darda', and the best of people in reciting the Qur'an. In the time of Abd al-Malik, the circles in the mosque of Damascus read the Qur'an while he sat. Abd al-Malik relieved him of the narrating of stories and left him in the judgeship. 3
