Chain of transmission
Summary
Malik transmits from Ibn Shihab, from Sulayman ibn Yasar, that the people of Syria said to Abu Ubayda ibn al-Jarrah (may God be pleased with him): take charity from our horses and slaves. He refused; then they asked him again and he wrote to Umar ibn al-Khattab (may God be pleased with him), who refused. They asked again and he wrote to Umar, who wrote back: if they wish, take it from them and return it to them, and provide for their slaves. Malik says the meaning of 'return it to them' is to their poor. The editor notes that Abu Musab, al-Shaybani and Yahya ibn Bukayr transmitted it from Malik. 1
