Summary
A saying of Malik: Umar ibn al-Khattab (may God be pleased with him) said: one should not combine what is separate, nor separate what is combined, for fear of charity, and he meant the owners of livestock. The explanation of 'do not combine what is separate': three men each with forty sheep on which charity is due, and when the collector comes they combine them so that only one sheep is due on them; they are forbidden that. The explanation of 'do not separate what is combined': associates each with a hundred sheep and one more, so three sheep are due on them; when the collector comes they separate their sheep so that only one falls on each; they are forbidden that. 1
