«نعم، تعد عليهم بالسخلة، يحملها الراعي، ولا تأخذها، ولا تأخذ الأكولة ولا الربى ولا الماخض ولا فحل الغنم»
A verbatim excerpt of the text, forty words at most; the full text is in the edition cited under sources
Summary
The first report in the chapter on counting young animals in charity. Malik transmits from Thawr ibn Zayd al-Dili, from a son of Abdullah ibn Sufyan al-Thaqafi, from his grandfather Sufyan ibn Abdullah, that Umar ibn al-Khattab (may God be pleased with him) sent him as a collector, and he used to count the young animals against the people. They said: do you count against us the young animals and take nothing of them? When he came to Umar and mentioned it, Umar said: yes, you count against them the young animal that its shepherd carries and you do not take it; you do not take the fattened animal, the nursing ewe, the pregnant ewe or the ram; you take the yearling and the two-year-old; that is fair between the nourishment of the sheep and their best. Malik explains: the sakhla is a newborn young animal; the rabi is one that has given birth and nurses its young; the makhid is pregnant; the akula is a fattened sheep for eating. 1
