Summary
Malik transmits from Yahya ibn Said that Abu al-Darda wrote to Salman al-Farisi (may God be pleased with him): come to the holy land. Salman wrote back to him: the land does not sanctify anyone; a person is sanctified by his work. It has reached me that you have been made a doctor to treat people. If you are truly healing, well for you; but if you are a quack, beware of killing a person and entering the Fire. The editor notes that the word 'doctor' (tabib) in the report means 'judge' (qadi), i.e. you have been made a judge. Abu al-Darda, whenever he judged between two men and they turned from him, would look at them and say: come back to me, and repeat your story to me. 1
