Summary
Malik transmits from Ibn Shihab, from Qabisa ibn Dhuayb, that a man asked Uthman ibn Affan (may God be pleased with him) about two sisters held in ownership, and whether they may be combined. Uthman said one verse makes them lawful and another forbids them, and that he did not like to do it. The man met one of the Companions of the Messenger and asked him; he said that if he had any authority and found someone doing it, he would make an example of him. Ibn Shihab thinks this was Ali ibn Abi Talib (may God be pleased with him). 1
