Ali refuses to lead prayer while the caliph is besieged

35 AH

Medina

When the rebels surrounded Uthman in his house, people asked Ali to lead the prayer; he refused, saying he would not lead them while the imam was besieged, prayed alone and went home, leaving his sons with the sons of other companions to guard the caliph's house 1. Al-Aqqad reads this as a warning that attacking the caliph was an attack on every notable in Islam 1.

Al-Aqqad: Ali's position was the hardest, and he could not have saved Uthman

Al-Aqqad holds that Muawiya had more means to protect Uthman had he wished it, while Ali stood between the caliph and the rebels and was blamed by both {cite:abqariyyat-ali-aqqad p.63}. This is the author's judgement, recorded here as a reading.
