Summary
A report that Malik transmits from Yahya ibn Sa'id from al-Qasim ibn Muhammad from Salih ibn Khawwat al-Ansari, that Sahl ibn Abi Hathma al-Ansari told him, in the chapter on the fear prayer: the fear prayer is that the imam stands with a group of his companions, and another group faces the enemy. The imam bows one rak'a and prostrates with those with him, then stands; when he is standing firm, they complete the remaining rak'a for themselves and give salam, and they leave while the imam stands, so they are facing the enemy. Then the others who did not pray come and say the takbir behind the imam, and he bows with them and prostrates and gives salam; they then stand and bow for the second rak'a for themselves and give salam. The editor notes Ibn Abd al-Barr's view that this is stopped on Sahl in the Muwatta, with most transmitters, and that it is raised through Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Qasim from his father. The stopped form is in al-Bukhari (5/145–146), the raised in the Sahihayn, and al-Tirmidhi gave both (565, 566) and judged the raised form sound. 1 2
