«ما رأيت رسول الله صلى في سبحته قاعداً قط، حتى كان قبل وفاته بعام، فكان يصلي في سبحته قاعداً»
A verbatim excerpt of the text, forty words at most; the full text is in the edition cited under sources
Summary
The first hadith in the chapter on seated voluntary prayer. Yahya transmits from Malik from Ibn Shihab from al-Sa'ib ibn Yazid from al-Muttalib ibn Abi Wada'a al-Sahmi from Hafsa, the Prophet ﷺ's wife: she never saw him pray a voluntary prayer seated until the year before his death, when he prayed seated and recited a surah, slowing it so that it became longer than a longer surah. The editor cites Muslim, al-Tirmidhi, al-Nasa'i, Ibn Hibban, Ibn Khuzayma and Ahmad, and notes Ibn Abd al-Barr's view that all Muwatta transmitters gave it this chain, and that Abu Hamma Muhammad ibn Yusuf erred in it through Musa ibn Tariq from Malik. 1
