Overview
Hudhayfa ibn al-Yaman was campaigning with the people of Syria and Iraq in the conquest of Armenia and Azerbaijan, and the disagreement of the reciters over the recitation alarmed him. He alerted Uthman to this, and he copied the codices and sent them to the regions. 1
What Uthman did
Uthman sent to Hafsa to borrow the pages that Zayd ibn Thabit had gathered in the caliphate of Abu Bakr. 1
He charged Zayd ibn Thabit, Abd Allah ibn al-Zubayr, Sa'id ibn al-As and Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Harith ibn Hisham with copying them into codices. 1
He told the three Qurashis that when they disagreed with Zayd about something they should write it in the tongue of Quraysh, since the Qur'an was revealed in their tongue. 1
He sent a codex to every region and ordered that every other page or codex be burned. 1
The report of Zayd
In the attached report about Zayd, a verse of al-Ahzab was missing at the copying, and was found with Khuzayma ibn Thabit. 2
The date
The Bukhari report does not give a year. The event is estimated between about 25 and 30 AH, an estimate, and needs an additional source.
