Opinions on the question

The question: How is Sa'd ibn Mu'adh's judgment on Banu Qurayza understood, and how far is their collusion established?

First opinion · Sunni tradition (the museum's frame)Main reference

Sunni sources record the siege and Sa'd's arbitration as a divine judgment against active treason during wartime that threatened the survival of the entire community, noting it matched Biblical law in Deuteronomy.

Sunni tradition (the museum's frame)Main reference

Al-Sallabi reports Sa'd ibn Mu'adh's ruling (killing of the fighters, captivity of women and children, division of property), and that Ali and al-Zubayr were among those who carried out the killing, citing Ibn Hisham; he records it without his own verdict at that point.

Academic viewSecondary opinion

Modern historians discuss the political, legal, and military context of the execution, assessing the degree of Banu Qurayza's collusion with Quraysh and the customary tribal laws of surrender and arbitration.

Academic viewSecondary opinion

This section of the book gives no modern academic assessment of the ruling; one is to be added later with a named source, and nothing is attributed here.

The Battle of the Trench (al-Ahzab)

In Shawwal 5 AH (February-March 627 CE), a confederate army of 10,000 Meccans and Bedouin allies besieged Medina; upon Salman al-Farisi's advice the Muslims dug a protective trench on their northern boundary; the siege endured for nearly a month amidst cold, hunger, and the treachery of Banu Qurayza, until broken by Nu'aym ibn Mas'ud's stratagem and a violent night windstorm.
