Quba

The Prophet's stay at Quba from Monday 8 Rabi' I 1 AH: hosted by Kulthum ibn al-Hidm (may God be pleased with him), he founded the mosque of Quba — the first mosque 'upon taqwa' — before riding to Medina on Friday; the length of the stay is debated (four days per Ibn Ishaq, up to 24 nights in Bukhari).

The Prophet stayed in the blessed village of Quba upon arriving near Medina, establishing the first mosque in Islam.

When the Prophet ﷺ and his companion Abu Bakr reached the outskirts of Medina, they stayed at Quba, where the locals welcomed them with joy. During his stay, the Prophet founded the blessed Mosque of Quba, praised in the Qur'an as founded on piety from the first day, with early Muslims enthusiastically helping lay its stones.

Storytellers (10–12) read the Explorers text, then cross to the Scholars text.

The pivotal first stop of the Prophet ﷺ and Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may God be pleased with him) on the outskirts of Medina in Rabi' al-Awwal of the first year of the Hijra (September 622 CE). Lodging with Kulthum ibn al-Hidm (may God be pleased with him) among the clan of Banu Amr ibn Awf at Quba, the Prophet spent several days laying the foundation for the Mosque of Quba, commemorated in the Qur'an as the mosque founded upon piety from its very first day. Marking the safe conclusion of the Hijra and the threshold of the Medinan commonwealth, Quba remained a venerated site that the Prophet visited regularly.

Summary

The Prophet lodged at Quba on Monday 8 Rabi' al-Awwal 1 AH (23 September 622 CE) and stayed until Friday 1.

The welcome

Medina's Muslims would go out each morning to the harra watching for him until the midday heat drove them back, until a Jew sighted them from atop a fort and cried at the top of his voice: people of Arabia — here is your awaited fortune! The Muslims leapt to arms and went out to meet him 2 3. They received him and greeted him with the greeting of prophethood; Abu Bakr rose before the people while the Prophet ﷺ sat silently, until Abu Bakr shaded him with his cloak and the people knew him 2.

The stay and the mosque

The Prophet lodged with Kulthum ibn al-Hidm — the likelier view — or, it is said, Sa'd ibn Khaythama; he stayed at Quba four days on Ibn Ishaq's account, which the author chose (Bukhari has twenty-four, fourteen-odd and fourteen nights), and he founded Quba's mosque and prayed in it — the first mosque founded on God-consciousness after the prophethood 4.

Ali caught up with them at Quba after staying three days in Mecca to return on the Prophet's behalf the deposits people had left with him, then emigrating on foot 5 6.
