Summary

Kulthum ibn al-Hidm (may God be pleased with him) al-Ansari, the Prophet's host at Quba 1.

Hospitality

When the Prophet alighted at Quba, he stayed with Kulthum ibn al-Hidm. In the author's view this is the better-established account, though it is also said that he stayed with Sa'd ibn Khaythama 1 2.

Ali ibn Abi Talib also stayed with Kulthum when he caught up with the Prophet, having emigrated on foot after returning the trusts he held 3.

The Prophet's stay at Quba (*The Sealed Nectar*, pp. 171–172)

The Prophet stayed with him at Quba. It is also said that he stayed with Sa'd ibn Khaythama, but the first account is the more firmly established in the book. He remained there four days (the Hijra journey and entry into Medina) 1 4.

Abu Ayyub al-Ansari

The Najjari Ansari who took the Prophet's baggage into his house when the she-camel knelt among Banu al-Najjar — 'a man stays with his baggage' — becoming the Prophet's host in Medina until the mosque and rooms were built. In al-Suhayli's report preserved by al-Samhudi, the house Tubba' built for the Prophet at his Yathrib conversion passed through heirs until it reached Abu Ayyub, descendant of the scholar Tubba' had lodged — so the Prophet's lodging closed that chain — and it is said, though the report is strange, that Tubba's gold-sealed letter was with Abu Ayyub when the Prophet arrived and he handed it over.
