The Prophet sent men to gather the sadaqa from every tribe to the Muslims' treasury in Medina, choosing for each tribe a man who knew it or was of its people.

After the Prophet ﷺ returned from the conquest campaign he stayed in Medina receiving delegations, sending agents and spreading teachers; as soon as Muharram's crescent of 9 AH rose he sent out the sadaqa collectors to the tribes. He sent Uyayna ibn Hisn to Banu Tamim, Yazid ibn al-Husayn to Aslam and Ghifar, Abbad ibn Bishr (may God be pleased with him) to Sulaym and Muzayna, Rafi' ibn Makith to Juhayna, Amr ibn al-As (may God be pleased with him) to Banu Fazara, al-Dahhak ibn Sufyan to Banu Kilab, Bashir ibn Sufyan to Banu Ka'b, Ibn al-Lutbiyya al-Azdi to Banu Dhubyan, al-Muhajir ibn Abi Umayya to San'a' and Ziyad ibn Labid to Hadramawt; also Adi ibn Hatim (may God be pleased with him) to Tayy and Banu Asad, Malik ibn Nuwayra to Banu Hanzala, al-Zibriqan ibn Badr (may God be pleased with him) and Qays ibn Asim (may God be pleased with him) to Banu Sa'd, al-Ala' ibn al-Hadrami to Bahrayn, and Ali ibn Abi Talib (may God be pleased with him) to Najran for both sadaqa and jizya. Not all were sent in Muharram — some waited until their tribes embraced Islam.

He sent Uyayna ibn Hisn to Banu Tamim, Yazid ibn al-Husayn to Aslam and Ghifar, Abbad ibn Bishr (may God be pleased with him) al-Ashhali to Sulaym and Muzayna, Rafi' ibn Makith to Juhayna, Amr ibn al-As (may God be pleased with him) to Banu Fazara, al-Dahhak ibn Sufyan to Banu Kilab, Bashir ibn Sufyan to Banu Ka'b, Ibn al-Lutbiyya al-Azdi to Banu Dhubyan, al-Muhajir ibn Abi Umayya to San'a' and Ziyad ibn Labid to Hadramawt; and Adi ibn Hatim (may God be pleased with him) to Tayy and Banu Asad, Malik ibn Nuwayra to Banu Hanzala, al-Zibriqan ibn Badr (may God be pleased with him) and Qays ibn Asim (may God be pleased with him) to Banu Sa'd, al-Ala' ibn al-Hadrami to Bahrayn, and Ali ibn Abi Talib (may God be pleased with him) to the people of Najran to gather both their sadaqa and jizya. Not all of these agents were sent in Muharram — some were dispatched only once their tribes embraced Islam — and this great attention shows how far the call to Islam had succeeded after the Hudaybiyya truce and then the conquest of Mecca, after which people entered God's religion in throngs. Ibn Ishaq records after the delegations that the Prophet sent his commanders and agents over the sadaqas to every land Islam touched; his list is shorter than the Raheeq's and names no month.

Summary

After the Prophet returned from the campaign of the Conquest (Fath), he stayed in Medina receiving delegations, sending out officials and dispatching preachers. As soon as the new moon of Muharram 9 AH appeared, he sent out the collectors of alms (musaddiqun) to the tribes 1.

The list of collectors

The Prophet sent Uyayna ibn Hisn to Banu Tamim; Yazid ibn al-Husayn to Aslam and Ghifar; Abbad ibn Bishr al-Ashhali to Sulaym and Muzayna; Rafi' ibn Makith to Juhayna; Amr ibn al-As to Banu Fazara; al-Dahhak ibn Sufyan to Banu Kilab; Bashir ibn Sufyan to Banu Ka'b; Ibn al-Lutbiyya al-Azdi to Banu Dhubyan; al-Muhajir ibn Abi Umayya to San'a'; and Ziyad ibn Labid to Hadramawt 1.

He sent Adi ibn Hatim to Tayy and Banu Asad, Malik ibn Nuwayra to Banu Hanzala, al-Zibriqan ibn Badr and Qays ibn Asim to Banu Sa'd, al-Ala ibn al-Hadrami to al-Bahrayn, and Ali ibn Abi Talib to Najran to collect both the alms and the jizya 2.

Not all of these officials were sent in Muharram. The dispatch of several of them was delayed until their tribes embraced Islam. This close attention shows how far the Islamic call had succeeded after the truce of al-Hudaybiyya and then the conquest of Mecca, after which people entered God's religion in throngs 2.

Ibn Ishaq's account

After the delegations, Ibn Ishaq mentions that the Prophet sent his commanders and officials for the alms to every land that Islam had reached. He sent al-Muhajir ibn Abi Umayya ibn al-Mughira to San'a', where al-Ansi rose against him while he was there. He sent Ziyad ibn Labid, brother of Banu Bayada of the Ansar, to Hadramawt and its alms. He sent Adi ibn Hatim over the alms of Tayy and over Banu Asad. He sent Malik ibn Nuwayra, whom Ibn Hisham calls al-Yarbu'i, over the alms of Banu Hanzala. He divided the alms of Banu Sa'd between two men: al-Zibriqan ibn Badr for one district and Qays ibn Asim for another. He had sent al-Ala ibn al-Hadrami to al-Bahrayn, and he sent Ali ibn Abi Talib to the people of Najran to collect their alms and bring back their jizya 3 4. Ibn Ishaq's list is shorter than the list in the Sealed Nectar, and it does not mention a month 3.

For young visitors

Ali's expedition to destroy al-Fuls, the idol of Tayy'

In Rabi' al-Awwal 9 AH the Prophet sent Ali ibn Abi Talib with one hundred and fifty men — a hundred camels and fifty horses, a black banner and a white standard — to demolish al-Fuls, the idol-temple of Tayy'; they raided Hatim's quarter at dawn, demolished it, and took captives among them Adi ibn Hatim's sister, whose appeal to the Prophet led to her release and to Adi's coming from Syria and accepting Islam.
