God does not change a people's state until they change what is in themselves

لا يغير الله ما بقوم حتى يغيروا ما بأنفسهم

Arjun treats this as one of the clearest social sunan: God does not withdraw a blessing or health from a people until they change the obedience or good they practise, and the sunan works both for good and for evil 1. Empty wishes and outcry without serious action carry no weight in these sunan 1.

Overview

'Arjun makes this one of the clearest social laws: God does not change a people's ease and blessing until they change the obedience and goodness in themselves — a law covering good and ill alike 1. False wishes and crying unaccompanied by earnest work carry no weight in these laws 1. He ties the law to the fitra on which God created mankind: distort it by misconduct and punishment descends to awaken them; return to good and He lifts it.

The seven ahruf

The Prophet's saying 'the Qur'an was revealed in seven ahruf, so read of it what is easy' — narrated through Umar's dispute with Hisham ibn Hakim over Surat al-Furqan; its exact meaning is one of the widest debates in Qur'anic sciences.
