A series of twenty-three episodes by Yusuf al-Qaradawi on the Assabile archive, each explaining verses of one sura, from al-Fatiha, the verse of fasting, the Throne Verse and the inheritance verses to the stories of the prophets, the slander affair, the servants of the Most Merciful, fay', juz' 'Amma and Surat Ibrahim; in some he says they are lessons of the last ten nights of Ramadan in Qatar.

The Assabile archive lists this series among the video lessons of Yusuf al-Qaradawi, in twenty-three episodes, each on verses from one sura, from al-Fatiha to the last part of the Qur'an (juz' 'Amma) and Surat Ibrahim. 1 2 The episodes are lessons al-Qaradawi gives himself, after a short opening nasheed, with no presenter. 3 4 In some he says they fall in the last ten nights of Ramadan; he calls episode 22 the closing night of the month, and in the last episode says the gathering resumes after the Ramadan sessions. 5 6 7 In one of them he says he has spent forty-six Ramadans in Qatar and that these lessons have been recorded for a long time, and asks anyone with old or rare tapes of them to contact his office. 8 9

Episode 1: al-Fatiha

He holds that the first revelation was the five opening verses of al-'Alaq rather than al-Fatiha, and says great undertakings begin in God's name, not in the name of an emperor or a leader, as Noah began boarding the ark and Solomon his letter to the queen of Sheba. 10 11 12 He holds that al-Rahman is a proper name of God, and contrasts the Torah's "Lord of Israel" with the Qur'an's "Lord of the worlds", seeing in it the universality of Islam. 13 14 He reports his teacher Muhammad Abdullah Draz of al-Azhar as calling al-Fatiha a request to God for the divine constitution, and says its plural "we", said even by someone praying alone seventeen times a day in the obligatory prayers, plants a sense of community and umma. 15 16 17 He explains the straight path as the middle in creed, worship, morals and law, and divides people into three: those who knew the truth and followed it, those who knew it and turned away from it out of desire and partisanship, and those who never found it. 18 19 20

Episode 2: the verse of fasting

He says the address to believers by the name of faith was known only in Medina, once Muslims had land and a community, that it classed people by faith rather than race and tribe, and that it occurs more than ninety times in the Qur'an. 21 22 23 Explaining the verse prescribing fasting (al-Baqara 183), he says it was known to earlier nations and trains the will by giving up the lawful. 24 25 On the traveller's fast he notes the jurists' disagreement and adopts the view of Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz that the better is whichever is easier, with the example of a traveller flying west to America whose day stretches to about twenty hours. 26 27 28 On the fidya verse (al-Baqara 184) he sets out Ibn Abbas's view on the elderly, the pregnant and the sick, and the other view that it was abrogated, and says the Qur'an takes every chance to feed the poor, as in the expiation for oaths. 29 30 31 32

Episode 3: the Throne Verse

He recalls that as children, when they finished al-Baqara, they held a party with sweets and sharbat and called it "the small khatma", and called finishing the whole Qur'an "the big khatma". 33 He cites the hadith of the Prophet ﷺ asking Ubayy ibn Ka'b which verse of God's Book is greatest, and says verses differ in merit by how much praise and affirmation of God's oneness they hold. 34 35 He reports the Yemeni scholar Ibn al-Wazir as holding that God's names are not limited to ninety-nine, and agrees. 36 37 He says philosophers and the Mu'tazila describe God by detailed negation and general affirmation, while the Qur'an does the reverse. 38 39 On intercession he rejects the pagan kind in which the intercessor imposes his will, notes that the Mu'tazila of old and Dr Mustafa Mahmoud in our time denied intercession in the hereafter, and holds that God has favour and mercy alongside justice. 40 41 42 On the Kursi he reports al-Hasan al-Basri's view that it is the Throne and inclines to it, mentions a report from Ibn Abbas that it is knowledge, and says the question should not become a battle between the early and the later scholars. 43 44

Episode 4: the inheritance verses

He says the pre-Islamic Arabs treated women as property, and that these rights came to women from God without any demonstration of women demanding them. 45 46 Explaining the inheritance verse (al-Nisa' 11), he says the Qur'an gives detail where things do not change with time and place, and rejects "new readings" and "Islamic feminism", saying in his words that Islam has no men against women. 47 48 49 He notes that some Arab laws dealt with the exclusion of grandchildren whose parent died before the grandparent through the obligatory bequest, and considers this ijtihad correct. 50 51 With an example of an estate in Qatar he argues that a son's larger share is offset by the dower and gifts he pays, so he sees no favouring of men. 52 53 He recalls a man he knew in his village who signed his land over to one fawning son and cut out the others; that son abandoned him and only the disinherited cared for him. 54 55 56

Episode 5: standing firm for justice

Explaining the verse on standing firm for justice and bearing witness for God (al-Nisa' 135), he says justice is the aim of every revealed message. 57 58 He cites the hadith of Bashir ibn Sa'd, who wanted the Prophet to witness a gift to his son al-Nu'man, and the Prophet's refusal to witness unequal treatment of children. 59 60 He relates that the Prophet sent Abdullah ibn Rawaha to assess the date crop of Khaybar; the Jews of Khaybar offered him a bribe, he refused and promised them no injustice, and they said that by such justice the heavens and the earth stand. 61 62 63 He says nine verses of al-Nisa' came down in defence of a Jew wrongly accused (al-Nisa' 105), and sees in it God's justice to all His servants. 64 65 66

Episode 6: apostasy, and a people God loves

Explaining the verse on whoever turns back from his religion (al-Ma'ida 54), he cites the hadith of Heraclius asking Abu Sufyan whether anyone leaves the faith out of dislike for it. 67 68 He relates that claimants to prophethood rose after the Prophet's death, among them Musaylima of the Banu Hanifa, Sajah, al-Aswad al-Ansi and Tulayha, that the Arabs apostatised except the people of Mecca, Medina and Ta'if, and that al-Hasan al-Basri said the verse refers to Abu Bakr and his companions. 69 70 71 He gives his view on apostasy: he distinguishes one who keeps apostasy hidden in himself from one who declares it and calls others to it, which he sees as a great trial that must be resisted. 72 73 74 He says missionaries met in 1977 in Basel, Switzerland, to Christianise the world, gives Afghanistan as an example, and mentions a treatise by Abu al-Hasan al-Nadwi, whom he says he knew and lived alongside, titled "An Apostasy, and No Abu Bakr for It". 75 76 77 He says the disbelievers of the verse are those hostile to this religion, not all non-Muslims. 78

Episode 7: the closing verses of al-Hijr

He says the closing verses of al-Hijr console the Prophet for the harm the polytheists did him in Mecca (al-Hijr 85). 4 He rejects a statement he attributes to the Pope of the Vatican, that in Islam God's will is absolute and bound by neither reason nor wisdom, saying Muslim scholars agree it is bound by wisdom. 79 He holds that "the seven oft-repeated" are al-Fatiha rather than the seven long suras, since al-Hijr is Meccan and the long suras Medinan (al-Hijr 87). 80 81 He says the mockers targeted weak believers who had no clan to protect them, such as Ammar ibn Yasir (may God be pleased with him), Bilal ibn Rabah (may God be pleased with him) and Khabbab ibn al-Aratt (may God be pleased with him). 82 He explains "certainty" at the end of the sura as death (al-Hijr 99), and calls misguided the claim of some extreme Sufis that certainty is a knowledge that ends religious duties. 83 84

Episode 8: those who want this world and those who want the next

He says Surat al-Isra' is also called Surat Bani Isra'il, and that a rich man is not one of the people of this world if the world is in his hand and not his heart (al-Isra' 18, 19). 85 86 He says the Qur'an ties outcomes to what a person wills. 87 He recalls country people in his village content with bread and old cheese, and tells of a Bedouin who told al-Hajjaj ibn Yusuf that hunger and good health, not the cook, made the food good. 88 89 90 He cites a saying attributed to Ali describing the world as beginning in weeping, its middle toil and its end perishing, and says wealthy Companions such as Uthman and Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf (may God be pleased with him) owned the world without it owning them. 91 92 93 This is what renunciation means for him. 94 93

Episode 9: the prophets who called and were answered

He says Surat al-Anbiya' is Meccan and treats the story of Abraham in more detail than any other sura. 95 96 He says Noah's trial was a trial of his mission, while Ayyub's was personal, as if he had set "the world record" in patience (al-Anbiya' 83). 97 98 He rejects the story of worms falling from his body as one of the Isra'iliyyat, unfit for the station of prophethood. 99 100 He says the time and place of Idris are unknown, rejects an Egyptian minister of religious endowments' claim that Idris was Osiris for want of evidence, and holds Dhu al-Kifl to be a prophet because he is listed with the prophets. 101 102 103 He says Yunus left his town of Nineveh near Mosul, finds three principles in his prayer in the darkness (al-Anbiya' 87): God's oneness, declaring God free of flaw, and admitting one's fault; and says a person in distress should call not on "my master so-and-so" but on God alone. 104 105 106 He notes that Ibn al-Qayyim put the prayer of Yunus first among the prayers for distress in Zad al-Ma'ad. 107

Episode 10: the slander affair

He says Surat al-Nur is a Medinan sura of rulings and manners, then tells the story of the slander (ifk) (al-Nur 11): a lie invented about Aisha and Safwan ibn al-Mu'attal al-Sulami on the campaign of al-Muraysi', spread by the head of the hypocrites, Abdullah ibn Ubayy ibn Salul. 108 109 110 111 He tells of her lost necklace, of her litter being loaded without anyone noticing she was absent, and of Safwan finding her and not speaking a word to her. 112 113 114 He says revelation came only after a full month, and sees in this an answer to those who claim Muhammad made up revelation. 115 116 He lists the three penalties for slander: flogging, rejection of testimony and the name of wrongdoer (al-Nur 4). 117 He says Aisha narrated more than a thousand hadith, that Ibn al-Qayyim counted her among the Companions who gave many fatwas, and that al-Zarkashi wrote a book on her corrections of other Companions. 118 119

Episode 11: the servants of the Most Merciful

He says reflecting on the Qur'an is among the greatest acts of worship, lists the Qur'an's portraits of the God-fearing, the believers and the people of understanding, and then explains the portrait of the servants of the Most Merciful (al-Furqan 63). 120 121 He says a person's walk reveals his character, cites Abu al-Ala al-Ma'arri's line about treading lightly because the earth's surface is made of bodies, and says that in his forty-five years and more in Qatar cemeteries have filled and been closed. 122 123 124 He distinguishes squandering, spending on the forbidden even a little, from excess, going beyond the limit in the permitted (al-Furqan 67). 125 He tells how Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz ordered a relative who had bought a ring stone for a thousand dirhams to sell it, feed the hungry with its price and wear an iron ring instead. 126 127 He says a child who comes top at school but does not pray is no comfort to the eyes (al-Furqan 74). 128

Episode 12: the People of the Book who believed

He says Moses is the prophet mentioned most in the Qur'an, and lists the meanings of the word kitab by context. 129 130 He distinguishes three wordings about the People of the Book: the Book given with God named as giver is praise; the passive wording can be praise or blame; being given only a share of the Book is blame (al-Qasas 52). 131 132 He cites reports from Sa'id ibn Jubayr that these believers were Abyssinians from the Najashi's people, and says Najashi is a title, like Kisra, Qaysar and Pharaoh. 133 134 He reports Ibn Taymiyya's view that "it was revealed about so-and-so" means its ruling covers him, not that he was its cause. 135 136 He says Islam is not the name of Muhammad's religion alone, and that the verse which leaves each side its own deeds is a basis for tolerance between religions (al-Qasas 55). 137 138

Episode 13: the miracle of the Qur'an

He says the polytheists mocked the Qur'an for naming the spider, the ant, the bee and the fly, and that these creatures are nations like humans. 139 140 He rejects a modern claim that the Book, the Qur'an, the Criterion and the Reminder are different things, and says every field respects specialisation except religion. 141 142 He says the Prophet could neither read nor write, by everyone's admission (al-'Ankabut 48). 143 He contrasts a physical miracle, which convinces only those who saw it, with the Qur'an, which he calls a rational and literary miracle that is universal and lasting, and mentions Rashid Rida's book al-Wahy al-Muhammadi. 144 145 146 147

Episode 14: the verse of choice

He says Surat al-Ahzab is Medinan and comments on the Battle of the Confederates (al-Ahzab 28). 148 He cites Aisha that crescent after crescent would pass with no fire lit in the Prophet's house, and describes the wives' request for more maintenance as "a kind of women's demonstration". 149 150 He relates that the Prophet began with Aisha, who chose God and His Messenger without consulting her parents, and that all the wives chose the same. 151 152 He recalls that in his village women worked with men in the fields, and says women today work as teachers and doctors, in banks and companies, and that there is no objection when there is need. 153 154 On the purification verse (al-Ahzab 33) he says it addresses the Prophet's wives first by its context, that the hadith of the cloak is evidence from outside the Qur'an, and reports Ibn Kathir that Aisha is the first included in it. 155 156 157

Episode 15: Abraham and the son to be sacrificed

He says al-Saffat alone tells the story of the sacrifice (al-Saffat 102), and defines the sound heart as one free of association, hypocrisy, showing off, arrogance and love of the world. 158 159 He says the one weak in argument resorts to violence. 160 He says the dreams of prophets are true and are revelation, and that the son's answer to his father, to go ahead with what he was commanded without mentioning himself, is stronger than Moses' words that he would be patient. 161 162 163 He holds that the son was Isma'il, saying that Isaac's name was added to the Torah's text out of envy of the Arabs and that some Muslim scholars took it from People of the Book such as Ka'b al-Ahbar. 164 165 His evidence is that the event took place at Mecca and that the good news of Isaac comes after the story of the sacrifice, and he calls weak the hadith attributed to the Prophet that he is the son of the two sacrificed. 166 167 168

Episode 16: the believer of Pharaoh's family

He says Surat Ghafir is also called Surat al-Mu'min, and that each retelling of the Moses story adds something new, like many photographs of one person. 169 170 171 He reads Pharaoh, Haman and Qarun as tyrannical kingship, its helpers, and unjust capitalism allied with it. 172 173 He says the believer of Pharaoh's family hid his faith for years to help the new call, and spoke out when Moses' life was threatened (Ghafir 28), and that a successful preacher always uses history. 174 175 He recalls that once in a lesson someone asked him the name of Moses' sister and he replied, "Do you want to propose to her?", to show that the Qur'an leaves names out. 176 177

Episode 17: Surat al-Shura

He says Surat al-Shura stresses consultation as a foundation of Islamic life. 178 He reports al-Ghazali that sincere repentance erases the trace of sin (al-Shura 25). 179 As an example of plentiful provision that breeds arrogance he gives America, a whole continent, against Bangladesh with a hundred and seventy million on a small piece of land (al-Shura 27). 180 He says Islam prescribed the prayer for rain because God alone sends rain, and rejects the jahiliyya belief in rain-stars (al-Shura 28). 181 182 He describes the galaxies and the expanding universe, disagrees with Ibn Kathir in counting angels among the "creatures", and says the plain sense of the verse allows living beings in the heavens (al-Shura 29). 183 184 185

Episode 18: the rules of fighting and of captives

He says al-Bukhari reports that some called this sura "Surat alladhina kafaru", and that it is called Surat al-Qital. 186 He says Muslims do not fight unbelievers for their unbelief but for their aggression, and that for thirteen years in Mecca they were told to hold back their hands. 187 188 He says the Qur'an names only two ways with captives, release as a favour or ransom (Muhammad 4), and reports Ibn al-Qayyim that the Prophet never enslaved an adult male. 189 190 He holds that slavery was a world system, that Islam closed its routes except war captivity, which it left permitted rather than required, and that Islam would be the first to welcome its abolition. 191 192 193 He relates that in the time of Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz a governor found no poor person to receive zakat and was told to buy slaves with it and free them. 194 195

Episode 19: al-Rahman and the balance

He says Surat al-Rahman is Meccan, and cites a hadith from Jabir that the Prophet recited it to the jinn, who answered better than the Companions. 196 197 He says dividing the Qur'an into hizbs and juz's is the work of later scholars, not of the Companions. 198 He says the word al-Rahman occurs fifty-seven times in the Qur'an, reaching a hundred and sixty-nine with the basmalas, and mentions Muhammad Fu'ad Abd al-Baqi's concordance. 199 He places the teaching of the Qur'an before the creation of man as the greatest blessing, and cites Ahmad Shawqi's poem on the teacher. 200 201 He links the cosmic balance to ecological balance, and says the command neither to exceed in the balance nor to skimp in it (al-Rahman 8) is the method of the middle way, the ship of salvation for the umma. 202 203 204

Episode 20: fay' and self-sacrifice

He says Ibn Abbas called Surat al-Hashr the sura of Banu al-Nadir, and that the Prophet gave most of the fay' to the Emigrants and only two of the Ansar, who were in need (al-Hashr 7). 205 206 He says that for him the most important matter in economics is how wealth is distributed, and sets the capitalist theory voiced by the people of Madyan against the theory of stewardship. 207 208 He divides giving into three ranks: obligatory zakat, recommended charity and praised self-sacrifice (ithar) (al-Hashr 9). 209 He relates that Umar found in al-Hashr the answer for the lands of the Sawad and Egypt, made them an endowment for the generations of Muslims under a land tax, and applies the same reasoning to the Gulf's oil wealth. 210 211 212

Episode 21: Blessed is He in whose hand is the dominion

He says some of the early generations kept silent on the attribute verses while the later scholars adopted interpretation, and that he wrote a book on this, Fusul fi al-'Aqida bayn al-Salaf wa-l-Khalaf, in which he allowed the later scholars' interpretation when it is close and not forced (al-Mulk 1). 213 214 215 He tells how Ibn al-Sammak asked Harun al-Rashid whether he would give half his kingdom for a drink of water and the other half to pass it, and then asked what such a kingdom was worth. 216 He says death is created and so is not mere nothingness, that the verse makes the measure the best in deeds rather than the most, and reports al-Fudayl that the best deed is the most sincere and the most correct (al-Mulk 2). 217 218 219 He says the default in worship is prohibition and in worldly matters permission. 220

Episode 22: juz' 'Amma, the closing night

He says humanity's problem is that it forgets the hereafter, and reports Jamal al-Din al-Afghani calling the struggle for survival a struggle for annihilation. 221 222 He holds that on the Day of Resurrection a person finds the deed itself, and that modern recording of sound and image has brought this meaning closer. 223 He says if those who shave a few grams off a kilo are threatened, consider those who devour people's wealth (al-Mutaffifin 1). 224 He says the Day of Resurrection is the day of absolute individuality ('Abasa 34), and that the best thing to take away after thirty days of fasting is sincere repentance (al-Tahrim 8). 225 226

Episode 23: Surat Ibrahim and the rules of interpretation

He says those who cannot add to or take from the Qur'an mislead people with new readings, and mentions a conference on Islamic feminism held in Paris more than a month earlier that called for a feminist interpretation. 227 228 229 He lists the rules of interpretation: the Qur'an by the Qur'an, then the sound Sunna, then the early generations, within Arabic usage, context and the occasions of revelation. 230 He says he explained Surat al-Ra'd years ago at the Umar ibn al-Khattab (may God be pleased with him) mosque, and so now begins with Surat Ibrahim (Ibrahim 1). 231 He rejects the claim of people living in France that the Qur'an is an oral text, saying it was written down from the first day, gathered after the Prophet's death and kept with Hafsa, and that Uthman then united people on one codex. 232 233 He explains the plural "darknesses" and singular "light" by saying falsehood takes many forms while truth is one. 234
