Summary

The Assabile archive lists this series among the video lessons of Yusuf al-Qaradawi, in nine short episodes of about a quarter of an hour each. 1 2 The episodes are instalments of a television programme called Ta'ammulat Qur'aniyya (Qur'anic Reflections): each opens with a presenter's voice introducing a programme in which the viewer "sails" with the Shaykh as he reflects on and explains verses from some suras of the Qur'an, and posing the episode's questions; then al-Qaradawi speaks, and the presenter closes with a summary and the words "the talk continues". 3 4 5 The suras covered are Al Imran in episodes 1 and 2, al-Nisa' in episodes 3 to 7, al-Ma'ida in episode 8 and al-An'am in episode 9. 6 7 8 9

The machine transcripts of these episodes read clearly for the most part; what is written here comes from al-Qaradawi's own words where they read clearly, and the presenter's summaries are not attributed to him. 1

Episode 1: the People of the Book; the choosing of Adam and Noah

He says the Qur'an gives attention to the People of the Book in general and to the Messiah and his people in particular, and recounts that at a Muslim–Christian dialogue in Rome called "the Islamic-Christian summit" he said that Muslims recognise Christians while Christians do not recognise Muslims. 10 11 He says he told them that three suras of the Qur'an point to the Messiah: one named after Maryam, while no sura is named after the Prophet ﷺ's mother, Khadija or Fatima; Al Imran, the family of the Messiah; and al-Ma'ida, adding that the table asked for by the Messiah's followers is not mentioned in the Gospel. 12 13 14 15 Among miracles he says the Qur'an records and the Gospels in circulation do not, he lists the Messiah speaking in the cradle and making a bird from clay, which he considers greater than raising the dead, since the dead man had once been alive. 16 17 18 He recalls a conference with Christians in Cairo where, when the Muslims proposed the phrases "the heavenly religions" and then "the divine values" for the closing statement, the other side refused because it does not recognise Islam as a heavenly religion. 18 19

He then turns to the verse of choosing (Al Imran 33): choosing is God's own affair, by which He favours whom He wills among people and times, such as Ramadan, the sacred months, the day of Arafa and the Night of Decree. 20 21 He says Adam is the first father of humankind and Noah the second, since those who survived the flood were Noah's descendants; he notes that the Torah dates Adam and the age of the world, that the Qur'an sets no date for Adam, Noah or the Hour, and that in his view no verse in Islam contradicts scientific facts. 22 23 24 25 26 27 He sets out the disagreement over Adam's prophethood: the majority of Muslim scholars hold that he was a prophet, while some date prophethood from Noah; he prefers the first, because humans were created under obligation and there is no obligation except through prophethood. 25 28 29 26 He says prophethood is a choosing by God and is not acquired by effort and devotion, and that scholars list truthfulness, trustworthiness, delivering the message and acuity among the qualities of prophets. 30 31 32

Episode 2: Maryam, Zakariyya and acceptance

He says good is inherited as evil is, giving the examples of Adi ibn Hatim (may God be pleased with him), who followed his father Hatim al-Ta'i, and of Noah's people, among whom more than thirty generations passed, each, as he puts it, worse than the last. 33 34 35 He relates that the wife of Imran lost her husband while carrying a child she thought was a boy, and vowed it to the service of the temple, devoted to God alone, and he dwells on her prayer that it be accepted (Al Imran 35). 36 37 He says what matters in any deed is its acceptance, and tells of a righteous man who wept in his final illness and, when his students reminded him of his deeds, said he did not know whether any of it had been accepted. 38 39 He says her mother named Maryam after Moses' sister, as is said, and sought refuge for her and her offspring from Satan (Al Imran 36). 40 41 He pauses on a common mistake in Arabic: the right form is qabul with a fatha, and the phrase qabila bi-kadha is wrong. 42 43

He says Zakariyya was the senior of the rabbis who took charge of Maryam; he reports the exegetes' view that he found winter fruit with her in summer and summer fruit in winter, comments that this would not seem strange today, with trade between the two halves of the earth, and notes that the scholars who said it counted it a marvel (Al Imran 37). 43 44 45 He says this is one of the proofs Sunni scholars give for the marvels of God's friends, like the sleep of the people of the cave, then warns against exaggerating marvels until the universe seems to have no laws, and says the Companions, who understood the religion best, had no such exaggerations. 46 47 48 49 50 He closes with Zakariyya's prayer for offspring when he had reached extreme old age (Al Imran 38), saying God's door is open to whoever calls on Him. 50 51

Episode 3: women between the jahiliyya and Islam

He says the Qur'an came to honour women after the various jahiliyyas had demeaned them, that in Islam's eyes woman is man's counterpart, each completing the other, and that Islam did justice to her as a human being, a female, a daughter, a wife, a mother and a member of society. 52 53 54 55 He cites a saying he attributes to Umar, that the bonds of Islam are undone one by one when people grow up in Islam who do not know the jahiliyya. 56 57 He then explains the verse forbidding the inheriting of women against their will (al-Nisa' 19): before Islam a woman was inherited rather than inheriting, and inheritance went to those who rode horses and bore arms, until Islam fixed a share for women and set out their inheritance in three verses. 58 59 60 61 He describes how the dead man's heir would keep his widow for himself if she pleased him, or bar her from marrying until she bought her freedom; he says marrying a father's wife was an Arab custom, while he attributes marrying one's mother and close kin to the Magians (al-Nisa' 22). 62 63 64 65 He says Islam freed her from the control of the dead man's heirs, giving her a waiting period and then making her her own guardian, free to marry whom she chooses. 66 67 He calls the rule "no harm and no harming" one of the greatest principles agreed by all the schools, and says Islam allows a wife to pay her husband only when it is she who dislikes him and buys her release, recalling the woman Companion who returned the garden (al-Baqara 229). 68 69 70 71

Episodes 4 and 5: the family between God's limits and the ma'ruf

Episode 5 is titled in the archive "Verses from Surat al-Nisa' 3", but its recording repeats the lesson of episode 4, so the lesson is given here once with both references. 72 73 He says the Qur'an founded the family on two principles: a divine one it calls God's limits, the rulings of the Sharia on marriage, divorce, married life, maintenance and inheritance; and a human one it calls al-ma'ruf. 74 75 76 77 He defines al-ma'ruf as what people of virtue, goodness and sense recognise as right, and says maintenance differs from one setting to another. 78 79 80 He makes the Prophet the highest model of living with one's wife in kindness (al-Nisa' 19), saying he spent most of his life with one wife older than himself and dealt with wives of many backgrounds, among them Safiyya bint Huyayy (may God be pleased with her). 81 82 83 He says God commanded men not to answer their emotions quickly and pull homes down, and explains placing divorce in the man's hand by his view that women are more emotional and that the man is expected to weigh the consequences more. 84 85 86 He tells of a man who divorced his wife because she answered that she did not love him, and of Umar saying that few homes are built on love and that people live together by Islam and good conduct; he explains the affection (mawadda) of the verse on spouses (al-Rum 21) as the quiet love that comes after marriage. 87 88 89 90 91 He says the soundness of the individual leads to that of the family, then of society, then of the umma, then of all humanity. 92

Episode 6: the verses of good news in al-Nisa'

He asks what the eight verses of al-Nisa' are, and begins with the three that follow the list of women one may not marry (al-Nisa' 26, 27, 28): God does not forbid things to people to punish them, nor permit things to pamper them, but permits the good and forbids the foul for their benefit. 93 94 95 96 He says what was done in the jahiliyya is forgiven, since there is no obligation before a messenger is sent. 97 The fourth is the verse on avoiding major sins and the expiation of misdeeds (al-Nisa' 31): hardly anyone is free of minor sins, and God wipes them out for one who avoids the major ones out of fear of Him. 98 99 100 101 He tells of a man who came to the Prophet confessing a minor sin, and of the revelation of the verse that makes good deeds wipe out bad ones (Hud 114). 102 103 The fifth is the verse that denies God any injustice, even of an atom's weight (al-Nisa' 40). 104 105

Episode 7: the three kinds of sin; asking forgiveness

He cites a report that sins are of three kinds: a sin between the servant and his Lord; a sin God does not forgive, associating partners with Him; and a sin God does not let go, the rights of other people. 106 107 The seventh verse of good news is the one promising that whoever does wrong or wrongs himself and then asks forgiveness will find God forgiving and merciful (al-Nisa' 110); he urges constant asking of forgiveness, noting that the Prophet would ask forgiveness seventy and a hundred times in one sitting. 108 109 110 He says the earth has two safeguards, the Messenger's presence, now gone, and asking forgiveness, the lasting one (al-Anfal 33). 111 112 The eighth is the verse saying God does not wish to punish those who are grateful and believe (al-Nisa' 147), and he says God's mercy embraces all things. 113 114 He cites a hadith qudsi, noting himself that it has no sound chain, and then the hadith that God rejoices more at His servant's repentance than a traveller who finds his lost camel in the desert after despairing. 115 116 117 118 He says these are the verses of good news as seen by the "man of the Qur'an", Abdullah ibn Mas'ud. 118 119

Episode 8: good things, excess and oaths

He explains the verse forbidding believers to ban the good things God has permitted (al-Ma'ida 87): transgression is forbidding what God permits, going to excess in it, or consuming what belongs to others; he distinguishes excess (israf), going beyond a reasonable amount of the lawful, from squandering (tabdhir), consuming the unlawful even a little. 120 121 122 He cites the hadith of the three men who asked about the Prophet's worship and found it little, and his answer that he fasts and breaks fast, prays and sleeps, and marries, and says the Prophet thereby established the middle way. 123 124 125 He defines the good (tayyib) as what a sound soul finds pleasant (al-Ma'ida 88). 126 127 He cites the hadith of the man who loved beauty, and the Prophet's definition of pride as rejecting the truth and looking down on people, and says the believer sees himself as less than others. 128 129 130 131 He then explains the verse on oaths (al-Ma'ida 89), dividing oaths with the jurists into the idle oath, which counts for nothing; the immersing oath, sworn knowing it is false; and the binding oath about the future, which carries an expiation. 132 133 134 135 He says the expiation is feeding ten poor people, clothing them or freeing a slave, with fasting only for one who cannot, and notes that many people think the expiation is three days' fasting. 136 137 138

Episode 9: al-An'am, the sura of tawhid

He says Surat al-An'am is the sura of God's oneness, which came to establish its beliefs and to combat the beliefs of association and the idolaters' claims about crops and livestock (al-An'am 136). 139 140 141 He cites a saying he attributes to Ibn Abbas: whoever wants to know the misguidance of the Arabs in their jahiliyya should read the verse on the killing of children in al-An'am (al-An'am 140), and says a father killing his son is the most terrible killing. 142 143 144 He then explains the verse on God's bringing forth gardens, palms and crops (al-An'am 141): it is God who truly produces them even though man works the garden, since He created the earth, the seed, the water, the air and the sun. 145 146 147 148 149 He dwells on beauty in the Qur'an, which he says draws attention to the beauty of fruit and herds so that one is not dull of feeling, and mentions the man of letters al-Manfaluti, whom young people read when they first take up reading. 150 151 152 153

A series of twenty-three episodes by Yusuf al-Qaradawi on the Assabile archive, each explaining verses of one sura, from al-Fatiha, the verse of fasting, the Throne Verse and the inheritance verses to the stories of the prophets, the slander affair, the servants of the Most Merciful, fay', juz' 'Amma and Surat Ibrahim; in some he says they are lessons of the last ten nights of Ramadan in Qatar.
