The Assabile archive holds thirty audio episodes titled "al-Hadara al-Nabawiyya" ("The Prophetic Civilisation") by Zaghloul El-Naggar, most of them ten to thirteen minutes long, in which he speaks alone; each opens with the tag "the Islamway site presents". 1 2 The subject of the series, as he presents it, is the scientific miracle in the Sunna: that the Prophet pointed, in his words, deeds, approvals and life, to a great mass of scientific facts that no one could have grasped in the age of revelation or for centuries after it. 3 4 The series opens with the rules and reasons for this field, then goes hadith by hadith: from the earth, the sea, the moon, eclipses and the new moons, to the fly, the heart, food and sleep, then rain and the water cycle, then suckling, heredity, medicine and the tooth-stick, and finally the tailbone, embryos, joints, dates and the signs of the Hour. 5 6 7 8 9 10

The machine transcripts read clearly for the most part; only what read clearly is written here, and figures that came out contradictory are left out. The figures, dates and scientific readings are the speaker's statements as recorded, not the museum's judgements, and the hadith he cites are described here in the museum's words, not quoted. Two remarks of his place the recording in time: he says the Prophet was sent 1,431 years ago or a little more, and he mentions Iceland's "latest" volcanic eruption. 11 12 Episode 19 is a word-for-word repeat of the recording of episode 18, and episodes 22 and 30 break off before their end in the archive. 13 14 15

Episode 1: Rules for the scientific miracle in the Sunna

He defines the scientific miracle in the Sunna as the Prophet's having pointed ahead of time to facts that came to light only a few decades ago, and says students of the Sunna did not take these up because the facts had not yet appeared, and because they studied the Sunna as an "explanatory note" to the Qur'an, which rests on creed, worship, ethics and dealings. 3 16 17 He says the hadith in this field turn on the creation, annihilation and resurrection of the universe, life and humankind, and that he avoids the absolute unseen and keeps to what can be judged in this world. 18 5

He then lists his rules: know the grade of the hadith as the scholars of hadith science set it, sound, good, weak or forged; gather the narrations and the hadith on one subject; understand the text through the meanings and usages of Arabic, through its context, the occasion it was said on and its aims; and read it in the light of the Qur'an, whose general statements the Sunna details. 5 19 20 21 22 He says no Muslim may reject a sound hadith: whoever understands it acts on it, and whoever does not, pauses at it. 23 He holds that a hadith pointing to a conclusive scientific fact is not to be rejected because one weak narrator is in its chain, and that a settled scientific fact can be "one of the means of judging a hadith's soundness"; this view is set out under the perspectives below. 24 25

Further rules: distinguish the literal from the figurative and move to the figurative only with sufficient evidence; do not strain the words; do not go into equations and fine detail; and never enter the absolute unseen, such as the divine essence, the spirit, the barzakh, the scale, the bridge, paradise and hell. 25 26 27 28 29 He limits the miracle to conclusive facts, except in matters of creation, annihilation and resurrection, which in his view lie beyond the reach of science. 30 31 The investigator must be a specialist known for his learning and piety; what he reaches is not the last word, since meanings widen as knowledge widens; and scientific interpretation, a human effort that earns two rewards if right and one if wrong, differs from the scientific miracle, which for him is a challenge that may rest only on a conclusive fact. 31 32 33 34 He closes by warning against belittling earlier scholars and by allowing that a hint in a hadith may lead to a new discovery. 34 35

Episode 2: Why the scientific miracle in the Sunna today

He says Muslim scholars gathered, sifted, arranged and explained the Sunna in dozens of volumes but paid no attention to its scientific hints, which are not meant for their own sake but came as witness to the Prophet's prophethood. 36 37 4 In an age of science, he says, people ask for scientific proof of prophethood, and the Sunna is under heavy attack. 38 39 He sets out the arguments of those he calls the orientalists: that the Qur'an is mass-transmitted and the Sunna is not, that the Qur'an was written down in the Prophet's lifetime while the Sunna was compiled in full only after his death, and that forgers slipped material into it; he answers that the study of the Sunna sorted the sound and good from the weak and forged, and that Muslim scholars "taught the whole world what documentation means" through it. 39 40 41

He says the Sunna is revelation in its meaning, its wording being the Prophet's, who was given concise comprehensive speech, and that the Qur'an and the Sunna are the two basic sources of Islam, a subject the museum treats under the authority of the Sunna. 42 43 Most of these facts, he says, became known only in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, most of them late in the twentieth, which makes them in his view the fittest address to the people of this age. 44 45 He cites the verses on obeying the Messenger and the hadith on holding to the Sunna and on lying about the Prophet. 45 46 47 He mentions the hadith forbidding the writing down of anything from the Prophet other than the Qur'an, and says it belonged to the beginning of revelation, out of care for the Qur'an, after which the Prophet allowed writing. 48 49 He cites the hadith of the man reclining on his couch who is content with the Qur'an alone, counts it among the proofs of prophethood, and says the call of those who style themselves Qur'anists is that very call, and that "whoever demolishes the Sunna demolishes the Qur'an". 50 51

Episode 3: The kindled sea, and the hadith of fire beneath the sea

He says that only in the late 1960s and early 1970s did scientists establish that the oceans rest on deep rifts that cut through the rocky shell down to the "zone of weakness", where the rock is plastic and partly molten. 6 52 53 He describes magma pushing up through these rifts to build the mid-ocean ridges, and peaks rising above the water as volcanic islands like Hawaii, Japan, the Philippines and Indonesia. 54 55 He says that in Arabic "sajara" is to stoke a fire under something until it glows, that the seas and oceans cover about three quarters of the earth's surface at an average depth of four kilometres, and that their water, most of the earth's water, which he puts at 1,400 million cubic kilometres, neither puts out these fires nor is boiled away by magma hotter than a thousand degrees. 55 56 57 58

He links this to the oath at the opening of sura al-Tur (al-Tur 6) and to the hadith that restricts sea travel to the pilgrim, the one performing umra and the one going out in God's cause and speaks of fire beneath the sea, and marvels that the Prophet never travelled by sea. 59 60 61 The hadith, he says, does not forbid sea travel but warns that it is a risk to be taken only for a great purpose, and "God's cause" for him covers jihad, preaching, the pursuit of knowledge, trade and diplomacy. 62 63 64 He reads the second half as meaning that all the earth's water was brought out from the zone of weakness, which holds more of it, so he disagrees with those who say the coming wars will be water wars, and recalls that water is provision and that the Prophet instituted the rain prayer. 65 66 He says the Arabs referred the kindled sea to the hereafter on the strength of the verse of al-Takwir (al-Takwir 6), yet everything sworn by at the opening of al-Tur exists in our time: Mount Tur in Sinai, the inscribed Book, the much-frequented House in the seventh heaven and the raised roof; so for him the kindled sea must exist now too. 67 68

Episode 4: The seven earths

He calls the whereabouts of the seven earths one of the hardest questions before scholars, and says the Qur'an names them in a single verse at the end of sura al-Talaq (al-Talaq 12), where the likeness is, for him, in number and in form. 69 70 71 He holds that God first created one earth and then differentiated it into seven, and one heaven and then differentiated it into seven. 72 He cites the hadith against wrongfully taking a span of land, whose taker will be encircled by seven earths, says al-Bukhari, Ahmad and others narrated it, and lists six narrations of it that for him show the seven earths all lie within our own earth, shell upon shell around one centre. 73 74 75 76

He counts them from outside in: the crust, the rest of the rocky shell below it, three mantles, the liquid core and the solid core, and says natural and man-made earthquake waves mark the boundaries between them as they bend from one medium to the next. 77 78 79 80 The solid core, he says, is a ball of iron, 90 per cent, with 9 per cent nickel and 1 per cent light elements. 81 82 From the phrase "the heavens and the earth and what is between them", which he says comes in twenty verses, and from the verse in sura al-Rahman on passing beyond the regions of the heavens and the earth (al-Rahman 33), he argues that the earth is at the centre of the universe, while also saying that the earth today lies thirty thousand light years from the centre of the galaxy. 83 84 85 81 He sees the atmosphere as a mixture of the matter of earth and heaven prepared by God for life. 85 He ends by saying the hadith came to forbid injustice, yet is scientifically exact without qualification. 86 87 88

Episode 5: "God was, and there was nothing other than Him"

He begins with the hadith of Imran ibn Husayn in the Sahih of al-Bukhari on God's existence before all things, the Throne upon the water, the writing in the Record and the creation of the heavens and the earth, and calls it a scientific miracle before it is a doctrinal one. 89 90 The Creator, he explains, is not bounded by place, which He created, nor by time, which He brought into being, nor shaped by matter and energy. 90 91 He contrasts Western civilisation, which in his view began by breaking with religion and the Church, with "our Islamic civilisation", which he calls the only one he knows of to join this world and the hereafter in a single equation. 91 92 Books of astronomy and earth science, he says, held for centuries that the world was eternal, until science in its overall findings confirmed that the universe had a beginning, since stars are born and die and the universe changes every moment. 93 94 95

He says the observable part of the nearest heaven holds between one hundred thousand million and three hundred thousand million galaxies, our own galaxy more than one hundred thousand million stars, that the universe is about 13.7 billion years old, and that the earth's rocks are close to five thousand million years old. 96 97 Some non-Muslim astronomers, he says, accept that the universe has a "reference point" outside it that must precede it and differ from it. 98 97 99 He then speaks of God's transcendence, of the bar on reflecting on God's essence, and of associating partners with God as a confusion of the Creator's attributes with the creature's; he relates that ten generations between Adam and Noah held to pure monotheism, that idol worship began with images of righteous men made so that people would remember them, and that Noah and then Hud were sent. 100 101 102 103 104 105

Episode 6: The splitting of the moon

These hints, he says, came to argue for God's divinity and the possibility of resurrection, and as an address suited to our age. 106 107 He then tells of the splitting of the moon: the unbelievers of Quraysh asked for a sign other than the Qur'an and, to defeat him, asked him to split the moon; he prayed and pointed at the moon, which split into two parts that stayed apart for some hours and then joined; some said they had been bewitched, while the wiser among them said to wait for travellers, and the caravans told them they had seen it. 108 109 110 111 He names the narrators Anas ibn Malik (may God be pleased with him), Ibn Umar and Ibn Abbas, Anas's report that they saw Hira between the two halves, and Ibn Mas'ud's that it split at Mina and the Prophet told them to bear witness, reports kept in the Sahih of al-Bukhari. 108 112 113 114 115 He links it to the opening of sura al-Qamar (al-Qamar 1), mentions that some exegetes, early and modern, held that the splitting has not yet happened and is a sign of the Hour, and answers them with the hadith that the Prophet's mission and the Hour are like two fingers. 111 116 117

He relates from the Indian scholar Muhammad Hamidullah that he edited an old Indian manuscript in the India Office library in London and published it in his book "Muhammad Rasulullah", according to which a king of Malabar in south-western India, whom he calls "Chakrawati Farmas", saw the moon split; Muslim traders on their way to China told him it was the sign of a prophet in Mecca, so he left his kingdom to his son, went to Mecca and became Muslim, died on the way back and was buried at Zafar in southern Arabia, after which his son and many in Malabar became Muslim. 118 119 120 121 122 123 124 125 This is his account of the document (needs_source). He says lunar scientists observe long, deep rilles on the far side of the moon that may, in his view, be remains of the splitting, then says sensory miracles cannot be explained scientifically because they break natural laws, and are a witness for those who saw them. 126 127 128

Episode 7: The hadith of the fly

He repeats the rule against impugning a sound hadith, then takes up the hadith of the fly that falls into a drink, which he says "stirred long debate" among Muslims and others. 129 130 131 He reports an experiment that he says scientists at the Faculty of Science of Cairo University and of King Abdulaziz University in Jeddah carried out: two rows of vessels with water, milk, honey and juices, flies landing on the first row without being dipped and dipped in the second; under the microscope and in cultures, what the flies had been dipped in held few pathogens. 131 132 133 134 (needs_source) He explains this by saying one wing carries bacteria and the other what counters them, "bacteriophage", and that without it the fly could not live on carrion and refuse. 135 136 137

The hadith, he says, is advice, not an obligation, for necessity, as for someone stranded in the desert with no other drink; whoever finds it repugnant and has an alternative may pour it away. 138 139 140 He says about 87,000 species of fly are known, that flies help break down waste and carrion, and sees in the pairing of disease and cure a witness to "pairing in creation". 141 142 143

Episode 8: The Ka'ba, the first land

He takes up a hadith saying that the Ka'ba was a small rise on the water from which the earth was spread out, says hadith scholars wondered at it, and that "dahw" in Arabic is stretching, spreading and throwing, for him a fitting description of a volcano throwing out lava and widening its cone. 144 145 Earth scientists, he says, have shown that the early earth was covered by water with no dry land, until volcanoes erupted on the floor of that ocean and built a ridge in its middle; the first peak to rise from it became a volcanic island, in his view the first dry land, on which the angels built the Ka'ba. 145 146 147 148 He cites the verse on the first House for people (Al Imran 96), saying its verb is passive so that for him it was the angels who placed it, and the hadith on the first place of worship set up on earth: the Sacred Mosque, then al-Aqsa, forty years apart. 149 150

The land, he says, grew from that island into a single continent scientists call "Pangaea", which a network of faults broke into today's continents, still moving; Mecca lay at the centre of that single landmass and still lies at the middle of the land, so that a circle centred on Mecca would enclose the land. 151 152 153 He cites the hadith that the Sanctuary lies opposite the seven heavens and seven earths, and the hadith of the much-frequented House in the seventh heaven directly above the Ka'ba, entered each day by seventy thousand angels who never return. 154 155 156 Some missionaries, he says, objected that the Prophet could not have been sent to all people when he was told to warn the Mother of Cities and those around it, and he offers the centrality of Mecca as the answer. 157 158 159 Bringing out the standing of Mecca, al-Aqsa and the Prophet's city by scientific method is, for him, "a fine card for preaching". 160

Episode 9: The lump of flesh that sets the body right

He takes up the hadith on the clear lawful, the clear unlawful and the doubtful matters between them, and stops at its end, on the lump of flesh that is the heart. 161 162 163 He describes the heart as a muscular pump sending blood to the body's cells and back to the lungs, says that a few seconds without blood to the brain is fatal, and reads the hadith as likening the heart in the body to the religious restraint in the soul. 164 165 166 Muslims, he says, grasped the hadith's worth only when Ibn al-Nafis discovered the lesser (pulmonary) circulation, which in his view is "wrongly attributed" to William Harvey. 167 168

He relates that he attended a cardiology conference in Saudi Arabia three years earlier at which the doctors said the heart is merely a pump; he reminded them of verses that ascribe understanding to the heart; a year later he was invited to a second conference, attended by three scientists from a research centre in California, who said the heart sends the brain more commands than it receives and is linked to it by blood, hormones and electromagnetic waves, and called the conference "The King of Organs". 166 169 170 171 172 173 He says heart-transplant surgeons' observations that recipients' desires changed set this research going, tells of a woman who saw in her dreams the murder of the heart's donor (needs_source), and names the researcher Paul Pearsall and his two books on "the remembering heart" and "the heart's code", and the HeartMath institute in California. 173 174 175 176 177

Episode 10: Every fanged beast and every taloned bird

He takes up the hadith of Ibn Abbas that the Prophet forbade eating any beast with fangs and any bird with talons, giving as examples of the first the lion, wolf, tiger, hyena, dog and cat, and of the second the falcon, hawk, saker, eagle and vulture. 178 179 180 These animals, he says, eat carrion full of bacteria, fungi and viruses, God gave them immunity that protects them, and a person who eats their meat is struck by those agents. 180 181 182 183 He adds the Prophet's ban on the jallala, permitted livestock and fowl that feed on carrion and refuse, forbidding their meat and milk until they are penned long enough to become clean. 184 185 He cites the English saying "you are what you eat" to argue that people take on something of the nature of what they eat, and ends by saying a Muslim keeps the command whether or not he knows its wisdom. 186 187

Episode 11: The sun and the moon are two signs

He relates that the sun was eclipsed on the day Ibrahim, the Prophet's son, died, and people said it was eclipsed for his death; the Prophet led them in two long rak'as and then told them that the sun and the moon are two signs that are not eclipsed for anyone's death or life, and told them at such times to remember God, magnify Him, pray and give charity. 188 189 The world then, he says, was "drowned" in superstition, explaining cosmic events by the death of a great man or a birth in a royal house, while the Prophet declared it a recurring natural event. 190 191 192

He explains total, partial and annular solar eclipses, that a total eclipse is seen along a narrow strip of the earth, and that a lunar eclipse happens when the earth is between the sun and a full moon. 193 194 195 196 Solar eclipses, he says, happen two to five times a year and a total one may last seven and a half minutes, while a total lunar eclipse may last about a hundred minutes. 197 196 192 He passes on scientists' advice not to look at the sun during an eclipse, and holds that both events disturb natural conditions on earth, so that much remembrance, prayer and charity are, for him, a way to ward off what may come with them. 198 199 197 He mentions the Sunna of calling "the prayer is gathering" and praying the long eclipse prayer with much supplication. 200

Episode 12: "Fast when you see it"

He takes up al-Bukhari's hadith on fasting when the new moon is seen, breaking the fast when it is seen and completing thirty days of Sha'ban if it is hidden, its narrations on estimating for it and on the month of twenty-nine nights, and the hadith of the unlettered community that neither writes nor reckons, whose month is sometimes twenty-nine and sometimes thirty. 7 201 202 203 The Muslim day, he says, begins at sunset astronomically and Islamically, and every act of worship has an astronomical sign: maghrib the disappearance of the sun's disc, isha the disappearance of the red twilight, red being the longest wavelength of light, fajr its appearance, zuhr the sun's passing the meridian, asr the length of the shadow. 204 205 206 He explains the dark of the moon, conjunction and the birth of the crescent, and says astronomical tables compute the crescent's birth precisely but count the month from whatever moment it is born, while for him the month begins only when the crescent is seen just after sunset. 207 208 209

He puts Muslims' disagreement over the start of Ramadan, Shawwal and Dhu al-Hijja down to the community's division into more than 62 states and the lack of a single authority, and holds that a sighting anywhere begins the month for the whole earth, allowing for time differences that for him never exceed twelve hours; the question of differing horizons is set out under sighting the crescent. 210 211 212 213 The lunar month, he says, lasts between 29 days 5 hours and 29 days 19 hours, so never more than thirty days, and two months of 29 or of 30 may follow each other. 214 215 216 He ends by saying the Muslim year is lunar-solar and that the eleven-day difference between the two years makes fasting and the Hajj move through all the seasons, as in the Hijri calendar. 217 218 219

Episode 13: Talbina, and senna and sannut

He reports a study that he says researchers from Egypt's Ministry of Agriculture, the Faculty of Agriculture of Cairo University and a professor at the University of Alberta in Canada carried out on barley: they found compounds that lower cholesterol, such as beta-glucan, vitamins and minerals such as potassium, magnesium, calcium, iron and zinc, found that a lack of them makes people irritable and prone to depression, and found that they act well on the connections between nerve cells. 220 221 222 223 224 225 He links this to the hadith that talbina comforts the sick person's heart and takes away some grief, and defines talbina as a thin soup of barley flour with its bran, named for looking like milk (laban) in whiteness and thinness, regretting that many think barley is animal fodder. 226 227 228

He then turns to the hadith that senna and sannut hold a cure for every disease except death, describing senna as a perennial desert legume that grows from Mauritania to Central Asia, whose scientific name "Cassia senna" comes from Arabic and which is known as Hijazi or Meccan senna; sannut, he says, is white cumin. 229 230 231 232 In this context he says Islamic civilisation carried the banner of knowledge for more than eleven centuries in the sciences, letters and philosophy, that Westerners took from it and then disowned it, that it was defeated only with the fall of the Ottoman caliphate early in the twentieth century, and that Muslims today "do not represent Islam". 230 233 234 He calls on Muslim researchers to study the make-up of senna and sannut and to test a mixture of the two. 232 235

Episode 14: Disliking sleep before isha and talk after it

He takes up the Companions' report that the Prophet disliked sleeping before the isha prayer and talking after it, and sees in it agreement with the natural order that made night for rest and day for livelihood. 236 237 238 He explains the "biological clock", and says the pineal gland secretes the hormone melatonin in the dark and in the first hours of the night, listing benefits he gives for it: an antioxidant, a help to the immune system, a remedy for insomnia and a brake on the signs of ageing. 238 239 240 241 Cells of the optic chiasm, he says, sense the light falling on the retina and stop the secretion of melatonin by day and restart it by night. 242 243 244 The dislike, he says, concerned the Prophet's daily pattern, and he would talk after isha for a need, such as an army setting out or a guest arriving; the best hours of sleep, for him, run from after isha to dawn, a subject linked to the rulings on sleep. 245 246 He adds a view of his own that the earth's protective layers, such as the ozone layer, the ionosphere and the magnetic field, contract at night (needs_source). 247 248

Episode 15: "Eat the oil and anoint yourselves with it"

He takes up the hadith on eating oil and anointing with it because it comes from a blessed tree, says olive oil is meant, that the olive is a long-lived evergreen that may live more than a thousand years, and that its origin, in his view, is the Sinai peninsula, from where it spread around the Mediterranean. 249 250 251 The olive and its oil, he says, are mentioned in seven verses. 251 He explains that olive oil's fats are unsaturated, that taking it regularly helps prevent clogged arteries, high harmful fats and blood pressure, and that it blocks the oxidation of harmful cholesterol through its vitamin E and phenolic compounds. 252 253 254 He says the cardiologist Hassan Shamsi Pasha showed that it raises helpful fats and lowers harmful ones, and recommends virgin oil of the first pressing. 255 256 257

He lists its uses: in medicines, ointments and soap, which in Palestine was made chiefly from olive oil, and in lighting lamps in the great mosques. 258 259 He cites the hadith of Mu'adh ibn Jabal on the tooth-stick from the olive tree, the Prophet's tooth-stick and that of the prophets before him. 260 261 He calls for planting olives in the Arab deserts, since the tree bears drought and needs little care. 262 263

Episode 16: Augury, ill omens and divining are of the jibt

He takes up the hadith that 'iyafa, tiyara and tarq are of the jibt, explains them as pessimism, the writing of amulets and the scaring of birds, which people released, taking a good omen if they flew right and a bad one if they flew left, and says all of it runs against trust in God, and that jibt is said of Satan, the idol, the soothsayer, the sorcerer and every falsehood. 264 265 266 267 Associating partners with God, he says, creeps into the heart unseen, and among Satan's ways to it is excessive love of a prophet, a saint or the world. 267 268 He cites the hadith on going to a diviner and believing him, and on taking knowledge from the stars, distinguishing astrology, the claim that the zodiac governs the temperament of those born under it, which he calls a superstition, from the study of astronomy, which Islam favours, and criticises the horoscope pages of Muslim newspapers. 269 270 271

His scientific case is that the sun, the nearest star, is 150 million kilometres away, that other stars are measured in light years, that the shapes of the constellations appear only from the earth and their stars may not be grouped at all, and that we see not the stars but their positions, as in the oath by the positions of the stars in sura al-Waqi'a (al-Waqi'a 75). 272 273 274 275 He relates Mu'awiya ibn al-Hakam al-Sulami's questions about going to soothsayers, ill omens and line-drawing, and the hadith of the word a jinn snatches, which his ally mixes with a hundred lies, and criticises cup-reading, card-reading and the advertisements of astrologers; all of this connects with ill omens and soothsaying. 276 277 278 279 280

Episode 17: A fire from the land of the Hijaz

He takes up the hadith of the fire that will come out of the land of the Hijaz and light up the necks of camels at Busra, says Busra is a city in southern Syria at least a thousand kilometres away, and that this shows how violent the eruption will be. 281 282 Mapping the geology of the Arabian peninsula in the mid-twentieth century, he says, revealed vast lava fields from Aden in the south to the Syrian plateau in the north, which he puts at 180,000 square kilometres, about half of them in Saudi Arabia. 283 284 285 He names two lava fields around Medina: Harrat Rahat to the south, with more than seven hundred vents by his count, and Harrat Khaybar to the north, with more than four hundred, says they have erupted several times and are still active, with hot water in some wells and vapour from the vents. 285 286 287 In one eruption, he says, the lava came close to Medina and then turned north. 288

He mentions violent earthquakes some months earlier at al-'Ays, north-west of Medina, when people were evacuated and the volcano did not erupt. 289 290 Most of the lava, he says, comes out of faults parallel to the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aqaba. 291 He then says the signs of the Hour belong to the unseen, whose time only God knows, but that science confirms this sign is possible, which places it among the signs of the Hour. 292 293 12 294

Episode 18: "Some of My servants rose believing in Me and some disbelieving"

He relates the hadith of Zayd ibn Khalid al-Juhani that the Prophet led the dawn prayer at al-Hudaybiya after a night of rain and then told them, from his Lord, that some of His servants rose believing in Him and disbelieving in the star, those who said they were given rain by God's grace and mercy, and some disbelieving in Him and believing in the star, those who credited the rain to a star's setting; he notes that the Companions had been angered by what the Prophet granted Quraysh at the Treaty of al-Hudaybiya. 295 296 297 298 Rain falls only by God's command, he says, and weather forecasts are approximations that hit and miss and run only a few hours ahead. 298 8

All the earth's water, he says, God brought out of its interior through volcanoes; more than seventy per cent of the gases from some volcanoes are water vapour, and a calculation from the number of vents and their output reaches the same figure of 1,400 million cubic kilometres. 299 300 301 He explains that air temperature falls with height to about sixty degrees below zero above the equator, where vapour condenses and returns as rain that cuts paths, forms soil, is partly stored in the rocks and flows on into the seas. 301 302 303 He then describes the water cycle: evaporation by the sun from seas and rivers, transpiration of plants and breathing of living things, winds carrying the clouds, and winds bearing dust grains that become nuclei of condensation, and says rainwater is the purest water in nature. 304 305 306 307 He recalls that the Prophet instituted the rain prayer, says the books of history and sira tell that whenever it was prayed in the time of the Prophet, the Companions and some of the Followers, rain fell, and mentions the people of 'Ad, punished with drought before the wind. 308 309 310

Episode 20: The keys of the unseen are five

He takes up the hadith of Ibn Umar on the five keys of the unseen that only God knows: what the wombs absorb, what tomorrow holds, when the rain will come, in what land a soul will die, and when the Hour will come, and dwells on rain. 312 313 314 Attention to the scientific miracle in the hadith, he says, is "a fine card for preaching" if used well. 315 312 He sets out explanations of rainfall, from cold and warm clouds meeting to clouds with opposite charges, and says no one can claim to understand its mechanism fully or control where, how much and when it falls. 316 317 He explains "what the wombs absorb" by saying a woman may conceive and lose the pregnancy without knowing, and that an embryo that dies early is absorbed by the wall of the womb as earth absorbs water. 318 319 Clouds, he says, never hold more than two per cent of the water vapour in the air, and cloud droplets are no larger than a micron. 320 321

Attempts at cloud seeding with salts such as silver salts, he says, have failed to control where rain falls; he relates that American agencies offered a Gulf state to turn its deserts into gardens with artificial rain, that the offer was put to him and those with him and they refused it, but the state accepted, and when the clouds were sprayed it rained thousands of kilometres from the place that had paid (needs_source). 322 323 324 325 He ends by saying that rain is provision sought only through obedience, and for him belongs to the absolute unseen known only to God. 326 325 327

Episode 21: Suckling forbids what kinship forbids

He says medical studies have recently shown a link between a baby's nursing in its first two years and the strength of its immune system, through antibodies passed in the nursing woman's milk that no formula or animal milk passes on, and that after two years the body makes its own antibodies. 328 329 330 He links this to the law's ban on marriage between those nursed by one woman in their first two years, who become siblings, the nurse becoming their mother in the bars to marriage but not in inheritance, which the museum details under the law of suckling. 331 332 He cites hadith that suckling forbids what kinship forbids, that there is no suckling except within two years, that only what fills the intestines before weaning forbids, and that only what builds bone and grows flesh counts. 333 334 335 He says one or two feeds do not create the bar, that at least three full feeds are needed "as some jurists held", and that the jurists held that only suckling under two years creates the bar, citing the verse on two full years and the verse listing the women one may not marry. 336 337 338 339 340

He links this to the body's rejection of transplanted organs unless immune systems are close, which is why donors are sought among the nearest kin. 341 342 To the question of Adam's children marrying their sisters at the beginning, he answers that it was allowed them because there were no others, a brother marrying a sister from another birth, suggests this may have been the cause of the quarrel between Cain and Abel, and says God made the bodies of the first humans in a particular way. 343 344 345 He ends by saying marriage between close relatives can bring out harmful recessive traits. 346 347

Episode 22: "The root runs deep"

He says all humans trace their descent to Adam and Eve, citing the verse on the taking of offspring from the loins of the children of Adam, and the hadith that every soul has a book in God's knowledge. 348 349 350 He then gives the Prophet's counsels on choosing a spouse well: that a man look where he places his child, for the root runs deep; that they choose for their seed and marry suitable partners; that the best enjoyment of this world is a righteous woman; that a woman is married for four things and one should win the one with religion; and that a man whose religion and character are approved should be given in marriage. 351 352 353 354 The counsel is for women as for men, he says: a woman should ask about the man who proposes and about his family, because the laws of heredity play a weighty part. 353 355 He quotes Abu Hamid al-Ghazali on the manners of a woman when a man proposes: she should have someone she trusts among her family ask about his religion and creed, his manliness and honesty, his companions, his keeping to congregational prayer and his fair dealing in trade, and put his religion before his wealth and looks, a matter linked to equality in marriage. 356 14 The recording breaks off there.

Episode 23: The black seed

He takes up the hadith that the black seed holds a cure for every disease except sam, which is death, in several narrations, and describes it as a dicotyledonous herb of the Mediterranean basin, scientifically "Nigella sativa", known in Egypt as habbat al-baraka and used as a spice, on bread and in pickles. 357 358 359 360 He relates that an Egyptian doctor who emigrated to the United States, Ahmad al-Qadi, who died a few years earlier, understood from the hadith that the seed had to do with the immune system, and showed at the Doctors' Syndicate in Cairo pictures of an immunodeficient patient given the seed in successive doses whose defensive cells rose to normal levels within a month. 361 362 363 364 (needs_source) He says the doctor found in it about 33 per cent fixed oils and 1.5 per cent volatile oils and a compound called "nigellone", and mixed it with honey and garlic into a capsule produced in the United States. 365 366 367 He calls on Muslim scholars to study every prophetic indication on remedies by laboratory method, holds that preaching with argument and scientific language is what the community has left, and calls on the rulers of Muslim states to support it; the subject connects with prophetic medicine. 368 369 370 371

Episode 24: "No year has more rain than another"

He takes up a hadith he says al-Bayhaqi and al-Hakim narrated, that no year has more rain than another but God distributes it, and mentions the Companions' wonder at it given runs of drought years and floods. 372 373 He repeats that God brought all the earth's water out of its interior, then says 97.5 per cent of it is in the seas and oceans, about 2 per cent is ice on mountain tops and the poles, about four kilometres thick at the South Pole and about three at the North, and less than half a per cent is in rivers, rocks, the air and the soil. 374 375 376 Evaporated water, he says, comes back drop by drop but newly distributed; without the ice the water would drown the land; a little more rain would be a disaster and a little less would bring desertification. 377 378 379 380 381

Episode 25: The tooth-stick at every prayer

He takes up the hadith that, were it not a hardship for his community, the Prophet would have ordered the tooth-stick at every prayer, with its narrations "for the people" and "for the believers", and says this came before Europe and America knew what cleaning the teeth meant. 382 383 He describes the miswak as a twig of the arak tree and says analysis has shown it holds, besides plant fibres, substances that kill germs, among them tannic acid and mustard oil, aromatic, resinous and mineral matter, and sodium carbonate, which he calls the basic ingredient of twentieth-century toothpaste. 384 385 386 387 He cites the hadith that the tooth-stick cleans the mouth and pleases the Lord, and says a Muslim should not come to prayer with bad breath because it harms the angels and fellow worshippers. 388 389 He widens this to physical purity of body, clothes and place, which he sees as the way into inner purity and humility in prayer, and lists the five practices of the natural way: circumcision, shaving the pubic hair, plucking the armpits, clipping the nails and trimming the moustache. 389 390 391 392 393 394

Episode 26: The tailbone

He calls creation, annihilation and resurrection among the most closed questions before scientists, then takes up the hadith that the earth consumes all of a human being except the tailbone, from which he was created and on which he will be reassembled, citing its narrations by Abu Dawud from Abu Hurayra (may God be pleased with him), Ibn Hibban from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, and al-Bukhari from Abu Hurayra, with the forty between the two blasts and the water from which people will sprout. 395 9 396 397 398 Doctors used to say all bones decay, he says, so the hadith was disputed for centuries. 399 400

He then credits the German embryologist Hans Spemann and his team, studying amphibian embryos, with noticing a fine line that appears on the embryo on the fifteenth day, where its layers specialise and the body's systems form, and which then withdraws to the end of the spine; they called it the "primitive streak" or "primary organizer"; he says they removed it and grafted it into another embryo, where it grew, and crushed, boiled and burned it and grafted it again, and it grew (needs_source), and that Spemann received the Nobel Prize for this. 401 402 403 404 405 406 He cites the verse in sura Qaf on God's knowing what the earth takes from the dead (Qaf 4), and faults Muslim scholars for leaving the hadith without laboratory study. 407 408

Episode 27: "Not from all the fluid does the child come"

He takes up the Prophet's answer on coitus interruptus, that every soul has a book in God's knowledge, and the hadith that a child does not come from all the fluid and that when God wills to create something nothing prevents it. 409 410 A single ejaculation, he says, carries between one hundred and three hundred million sperm, most of which die; no more than two hundred reach the egg and only one fertilises it. 410 411 He describes the embryo's stages from the morula to the clinging form attached to the wall of the womb, and says every species has its number of chromosomes, 46 in humans, with half carried by the sex cells. 412 413 414 415 The choice of the sperm that fertilises a given egg, he holds, is made only by God's will, and every human has a genetic fingerprint of their own. 416 417 418 419 Sperm carry the sign of maleness or femaleness while the egg carries only femaleness, he says, so the woman is not to be blamed for the sex of the child. 420 421 All of this he refers to divine decree and God's prior knowledge of every soul. 422 423

Episode 28: Three hundred and sixty joints

He says the Prophet's sayings covered creed, worship, ethics, dealings, the universe, food, prevention, death and resurrection "without a single error". 424 425 426 427 He then takes up Muslim's hadith that every human was created with three hundred and sixty joints, and that whoever magnifies, praises, declares God's oneness, glorifies, asks forgiveness, removes a stone, thorn or bone from people's path, and enjoins good and forbids evil to that number has moved himself away from the Fire; al-Bukhari's narration that each joint owes a charity every day; and the narration of Abu Dharr in Muslim that two rak'as of the forenoon suffice for all of it. 428 429 430 431 432 433 He urges the forenoon prayer, which many neglect, and gives its time as from when the sun has risen a spear's length until it passes the meridian. 433 434

He says he asked many orthopaedic doctors and none knew the number of joints, that the Encyclopaedia Britannica groups the skeleton without counting them, and that the doctor Hamid Ahmad Hamid counted them in his book "Rihlat al-Iman fi Jism al-Insan" ("The Journey of Faith in the Human Body") and reached 360. 435 436 437 438 439 What is meant, he says, are the movable synovial joints, not the fixed seams between the skull bones, and he gives as examples the ball-and-socket hip joint, from which engineers learned to make "ball and socket" joints, the gliding wrist joints and the joint between the two top vertebrae. 440 441 442

Episode 29: A house without dates

He takes up Muslim's hadith in which the Prophet told A'isha that a household with dates does not go hungry and that a house without dates has a hungry household, repeating it two or three times. 443 444 He distinguishes the unripe busr, the fresh rutab and the dried tamr, which keeps for a year or more, which is why, he says, the Prophet chose it. 445 446 447 The palm, he says, is mentioned in twenty places in the Qur'an; the date palm species has more than a thousand varieties, about four hundred in Arabia and about six hundred in Iraq; the palm bears drought and salty water, and its trees are male and female. 446 448 449 He describes its spear-shaped leaves, no more than thirty or forty at the crown, and water rising in its trunk up to thirty metres by capillary action. 450 451

He gives the make-up of dates as he states it: 67 to 71 per cent carbohydrates, mostly sugars, about 2.5 per cent protein, about 1.5 per cent minerals and about 10 per cent fibre, with vitamins and antioxidants, and says dates keep their qualities for a year or more until the new harvest. 452 453 454 455 456 457 He says they are a natural laxative and strengthen the muscles of the womb, helping childbirth, links this to the story of Mary and the palm trunk, cites the hadith on whoever starts the day with seven 'ajwa dates, and calls for laboratory study of such hadith to make them "a card for preaching". 458 459 460 461

Episode 30: The sun rising from the west

Some of what the Prophet foretold, he says, concerns the future and is hard to prove scientifically, yet some facts may give a glimpse of it. 462 10 He takes up the hadith that the Hour will not come until the sun rises from the west and people believe when belief no longer helps those who had not believed before, and the hadith that the first of the signs to appear is the sun's rising from the west or the beast coming out in the forenoon, and lists the ten major signs as he relates them: the beast, the Antichrist, the smoke, Gog and Magog, the descent of Jesus son of Mary, the sun's rising from the west, three sinkings of the earth in the east, the west and Arabia, and last a fire from Yemen driving people on. 10 463 464 465 He says the sun's rising from the west was the deniers' argument through history, then begins to set out evidence he finds in ancient climates recorded in rocks and air bubbles in the Antarctic ice, and in annual growth rings, in which, he says, scientists found daily lines under the microscope and noticed that the number of days in a ring grows the older it is. 466 467 468 469 15 The recording breaks off before the argument is finished, so nothing further is written.

In the Courts of the Hadith Qudsi (television programme)

A television programme of which the Assabile archive keeps thirty video episodes. Each opens with a hadith qudsi or a prophetic hadith that the presenter explains with verses, the views of the commentators and science films, after which Muhammad Mutawalli al-Sha'rawi speaks on it: the definition of the hadith qudsi, the witness of the limbs, rain and the stars, Adam's creation, the embryo and divine decree, illness, pardon, Yunus, Musa and the righteous servant, al-Kawthar, the Fire, the slaughter of death, the covenant, 'Arafat, the miswak, fasting, love for God, kinship, patience, seeking forgiveness and the vision of God.
