The Assabile archive holds twenty-nine video episodes of the programme 'Wa Yatafakkarun' ('And They Reflect') by Zaghloul El-Naggar, each roughly ten to sixteen minutes long, in which he speaks alone to the viewers. ¹ ² The series opens with the aspects of the Qur'an's inimitability in general, then with his reasons for attending to the scientific miracle and his rules for it, and then moves through the verses on the creation and end of the universe, the verses on the heavens, on the earth, mountains and iron, and on water. ³ ⁴ ⁵ ⁶ In the last episode held he says the next one is the final episode; it is not in the archive. ⁷

The machine transcripts of the episodes are clear for the most part, so what read clearly is written here, and figures that differed from one episode to another were left out. Every figure, date and scientific interpretation below is the speaker's own statement as recorded, not a finding of the museum, and reading the cosmic verses through scientific findings is a question on which scholars differ. ⁸ ⁹

Episode 1: the preserved Qur'an and its many aspects of inimitability

Zaghloul El-Naggar opens the series by saying that the Qur'an is the only form of God's word preserved in people's hands today, in the very language of revelation, Arabic, over fourteen centuries or more. ¹⁰ ¹¹ He says that while believing in the truth of the originals of the scrolls of Abraham, the Torah, the Psalms and the Gospel, they have in his view been lost, and that the Old and New Testaments, the Talmud, the Mishnah and the Gemara are human works that speak about revelation. ¹² ¹³ ¹⁴ He then says the Qur'an is neither poetry nor prose but a unique form of Arabic composition that challenged the Arabs to bring a sura like it, and that the challenge still stands. ¹⁵ ¹⁶

He grants that the early scholars concentrated on rhetorical inimitability because eloquence was the Arabs' distinction at the time of revelation, just as, in the exegetes' account, Moses' miracle was of the kind of sorcery and Jesus' of the kind of medicine; but he holds that the composition is a frame and the content matters more than the frame. ¹⁷ ¹⁸ ¹⁹ ²⁰ He makes the content of the Qur'an the religion with its four pillars, creed, worship, morals and dealings, and says that confining inimitability to composition diminishes the Qur'an, because there is 'no angle' from which a neutral person looks at the book without seeing some aspect of inimitability. ²¹ ²² ²³ In this episode he counts the doctrinal, devotional and moral aspects, saying that the Qur'an's moral code suits human nature without demands beyond human capacity, and then the legislative aspect, in family law, dealings, food, warfare and the prohibition of wine, drugs, killing and theft. ²⁴ ²⁵ ²⁶ ²⁷ ²⁸ ²⁹

Episode 2: twenty aspects of inimitability

To the five aspects already named he adds the social: building the family, the rules of the state, and the protection of the five necessities, religion, life, reason, honour and property, together with the ordering of international relations in peace and war. ³⁰ ³¹ ³ He then defines the scientific miracle as the Qur'an's having pointed ahead of time to a vast number of scientific facts unknown in the age of revelation and for centuries after it; he says many early scholars were not convinced of it because science had not matured, and that the Qur'an is at root a book of guidance, not of astronomy, medicine or engineering, yet its references to the cosmos came, as he puts it, 'in extremely precise scientific wording'. ³ ³² ³³

He continues the list: the prophetic and historical aspect, saying that written history ends about ten thousand years ago and that what lies before it, such as the dialogue between God and the angels on the creation of Adam and the stories of Noah and Hud, is known only through God's telling; the educational aspect, which builds 'the righteous person' and not merely 'the successful citizen'; and the psychological. ³⁴ ³⁵ ³⁶ ³⁷ He names the economic aspect in zakat, inheritance, the prohibition of usury and the writing down of debts, and says leading economists testified after the financial crisis that began in 2008 that usury was its main cause. ³⁸ ³⁹ Then come the administrative, the unseen, the phonetic in the verse-endings, and the affective, where he says he has met many who became Muslim merely on hearing verses of the Qur'an; then the miracle of preservation, the miracle of the 'Uthmanic script, which in his view carries the sound readings and the dialects of the Arabs, the challenge, absolute perfection and the method. ⁴⁰ ⁴¹ ⁴² ⁴³ ⁴⁴ ⁴⁵

When he reaches the 'numerical miracle', in the matching counts of opposed words such as this world and the next, angels and devils, he warns against some writers' use of abjad numerology (hisab al-jummal), saying it goes back to old Jewish origins, follows no sound mathematical rule, and is not known to have been approved by the Prophet ﷺ. ⁴⁶ ⁴⁷ ⁴⁸ He ends with a 'geometric' aspect in the fixing of places such as the opening of the cave and the ark's resting place on al-Judi, and says he does not claim these are all the aspects of inimitability. ⁴⁸ ⁴⁹

Episode 3: why the scientific miracle today

He gives his reasons for attending to the cosmic references: the Qur'an is preserved and so must be inimitable in every respect; Muslim scholars must demonstrate this inimitability each in his own field; and the cosmic verses cannot be understood properly within language alone. ⁵⁰ ⁵¹ ⁵² He says civilizations are meant to complete one another, not clash, but that in the age of globalization the dominant material civilization tries, in his view, to impose its values on others. ⁵³ ⁵⁴ He offers his reading of modern history: that hostile powers worked from the early nineteenth century to occupy and westernize Muslim lands and then to bring down the caliphate, and that Islam is under attack in the media today; he mentions the offensive cartoons and films and attempts to burn the Qur'an in Europe and America, and makes the answer a kind word and a clear argument. ⁵⁵ ⁵⁶ ⁵⁷ ⁵⁸

He adds that raising the subject rouses Muslim minds to return to science and technology, in which the community has fallen behind, and that most laws of the acquired sciences were in his view formulated by people who do not believe in religion, so he calls for reformulating them 'within a sound Islamic frame'. ⁵⁹ ⁶⁰ ⁶¹ He says the early exegetes, for all their merit, erred in explaining some cosmic references, confusing the star, for him a giant nuclear furnace, with the planet, a cold dark body that reflects starlight; light (diya') with illumination (nur); and the Hour with the Resurrection and the Hereafter; he excuses them because science had not reached today's level. ⁶² ⁶³ ⁶⁴ He cites the verse on pondering the Qur'an (al-Nisa' 82) and promises to set out the rules in the next episode, so that the matter is not 'an open door for all comers'. ⁶⁵ ⁶⁶

Episode 4: rules for handling the scientific miracle

He says the Qur'an holds more than 1,200 explicit verses on the things of the cosmos, from the heavens, stars, thunder and rain to the fig, the olive, bees, ants, milk and honey, and that they came not as direct scientific information but as testimony to God's divinity and oneness and to the certainty of the hereafter. ⁶⁷ ⁶⁸ ⁶⁹ Against those in religious and literary studies who think experimental science is all hypotheses and theories, he says that once science reaches the level of a fact or law it 'does not overturn itself', even if it is added to. ⁷⁰ ⁷¹ ⁴

He then lists his rules: understand the text by the meanings and rules of Arabic; know the occasions of revelation; take the Prophet's reported explanation; gather the sound readings; gather all verses on one subject, since the Qur'an explains itself; respect the context, with care over oaths by several things, as in Surat al-Tariq; and keep the rule that the generality of the wording, not the particular occasion, counts. ⁴ ⁷² ⁷³ ⁷⁴ ⁷⁵ ⁷⁶ ⁷⁷ Further rules: no strained readings or twisting of verses, since 'a small number of verses is enough' to testify to scientific precision; no descent into fine detail, equations and symbols; and an absolute ban on entering the wholly unseen, such as the divine essence, the spirit, angels, jinn, the barzakh, resurrection, Paradise and Hell. ⁷⁸ ⁷⁹ ⁸⁰ ⁸¹ ⁸² He insists that only conclusive, settled facts be used, not hypotheses and theories; that what the interpreter reaches is not the last word; and that one may start from the Qur'an or the Sunna to reach a fact others have not reached, and he faults Muslims for waiting until others discover a fact and then saying it is in their book. ⁸³ ⁸ ⁸⁴ ⁸⁵ He closes by asking that the efforts of earlier exegetes not be belittled, and by separating the scientific miracle, which for him rests only on the conclusive, from scientific interpretation, a human effort in which the prevailing theory may be used, so that if it is shown false 'the error falls on the interpreter', not on the Qur'an. ⁸⁶ ⁸⁷ ⁸⁸

Episode 5: the expanding universe and its origin

He says the stance of the miracle is a challenge and so cannot rest on a hypothesis or theory, and then makes one exception: the questions of creation, annihilation and resurrection, of the universe, of life and of humankind, because only God knows them; he cites the verse of al-Kahf denying that God made anyone witness the creation of the heavens and the earth (al-Kahf 51). ⁸⁹ ⁹⁰ ⁹¹ He says that in these questions the Muslim has a light from a verse or a sound hadith by which one of the theories may be raised to the level of fact. ⁹² ⁹³

He explains the verse on building the heaven and expanding it (al-Dhariyat 47), noting that the early scholars read it as the vastness of the sky and its Creator's power to make it vaster; he then says that as telescopes improved at the start of the twentieth century astronomers observed stars receding at speeds 'nearly three quarters of the speed of light', and that the dispute was settled only at the end of the first third of that century, when it was established that the universe is ever-expanding, all by his account. ⁹³ ⁹⁴ ⁹⁵ ⁹⁶ ⁹⁷ He then presents the Big Bang theory as he understands it: run the expansion back to a single point, infinitely small in size and infinitely great in matter and energy, which exploded into a cloud of smoke from which the earth and the heavenly bodies were created; he calls it the most widely accepted theory, but says human research alone cannot raise it to fact. ⁹⁸ ⁹⁹ ¹⁰⁰

He dwells on the verse of the heavens and earth joined and then parted (al-Anbiya' 30): ratq in the language is joining and binding, fatq is bursting and spreading; he calls the early exegetes' view, that the earth was stuck to the sky and then separated, 'incorrect', and says Muslims raise the Big Bang theory to the level of fact because of this reference. ¹⁰¹ ¹⁰² ¹⁰³ ¹⁰⁴ Among the scientists' evidence for the theory he names the expansion of the universe and the temperature of the background radiation, which he puts at three degrees absolute. ¹⁰⁵ ¹⁰⁶ He tells how he was invited to talk with an American official who had lived in Cairo for years and refused to read anything about Islam; when shown this verse the man stood up, and it led him to read the Qur'an; he says he does not know what became of him afterwards. ¹⁰⁷ ¹⁰⁸

Episode 6: the cosmic smoke

He brings together three verses that in his view describe how the heavens and the earth were created: the verse of expansion (al-Dhariyat 47), the verse of joining and parting (al-Anbiya' 30) and the verse of turning to the heaven while it was smoke (Fussilat 11). ¹⁰⁹ ¹¹⁰ ¹¹¹ He says astronomers for centuries described the origin of the universe as a cloud of dust or earth, that smoke by its linguistic and scientific definition is a gas with darkness, heat and solid particles, and that the Hubble telescope photographed it 'as the Qur'an described it: smoke'. ¹¹² ¹¹³ ¹¹⁴ He says astronomers call the first point 'the singularity' and say it exploded because it was in a critical state, while Muslims say God commanded it to explode, and he cites a sound hadith that God was and nothing was with Him. ¹¹⁵ ¹¹⁶

He says that however much information people gather they cannot settle how creation happened, and that theories multiply according to the beliefs of those who frame them, believer or unbeliever. ¹¹⁷ ¹¹⁸ He states plainly that he does not believe any theory of the universe's origin outside this picture, because the only reference on it is the word of God and His Messenger. ¹¹⁶ He ends with the disagreement among those who hold the Big Bang theory: some see an open universe expanding without end, which he attributes to their denial of the hereafter, and some a closed universe that returns to its first point; he says the Qur'an settled the dispute, and that the verse on the creation of the universe comes at the start of Surat al-Anbiya' and the verse on its end near its close. ¹¹⁹ ¹²⁰ ¹²¹ ¹²²

Episode 7: the folding of the heaven and the changing of the earth

He sets out the two theories of the universe's fate: the 'open universe' that keeps accelerating, and the 'big crunch', whose holders argue that the universe's temperature has fallen from millions of degrees to only three degrees absolute, so the outward thrust must be weakening until gravity overcomes it. ¹²³ ¹²⁴ ¹²⁵ ¹²⁶ He puts the age of the universe at about fourteen thousand million years. ¹²⁴ He says he supports the crunch theory because the verse of folding the heaven like the folding of a scroll for writings (al-Anbiya' 104) points to it, and explains the image by letters once written on an open sheet and then folded. ¹²⁶ ¹²⁷ ¹²⁸ He counts among the wonders of the book that the verse of the explosion is the thirtieth, at the start of Surat al-Anbiya', and the verse of folding the hundred and fourth, near its end. ¹²⁹ ¹³⁰

He then says the verse on the earth being changed into another earth, and the heavens (Ibrahim 48), settles the dispute between those who hold endless expansion and those who hold the crunch; he reads it to mean that the universe will be folded and then burst again, and from its smoke will be created an earth larger than ours and other heavens, from which people will be raised. ¹³¹ ¹³² ¹³³ ¹³⁴ He mentions the hadith of the 'ajb al-dhanab (the tailbone), and says science has shown that the body's organs form from a fine line called the primitive streak, which after formation withdraws to the coccyx, and that this bone was tested and, as he puts it, shown not to decay by burning, crushing or boiling (needs_source). ¹³⁵ ¹³⁶ ¹³⁷

Episode 8: the seven heavens and the seven earths

He says the question of the seven heavens and seven earths 'wore out the exegetes', that the Qur'an never names the earth in the plural explicitly, though many hadiths do, and that it refers to seven earths only implicitly, at the close of Surat al-Talaq (al-Talaq 12). ¹³⁸ ¹³⁹ ¹⁴⁰ He sets out the exegetes' attempts: that the seven earths are the planets of the solar system when they numbered seven, until they became nine, or that each galaxy or each heaven has its own earth; he rejects the last by the verse adorning the lowest heaven with lamps (al-Mulk 5), since for him the stars are in the lowest heaven alone. ¹⁴¹ ¹⁴² ¹⁴³ He holds that the 'seven paths' of Surat al-Mu'minun (al-Mu'minun 17) are not the heavens themselves, since a tariqa in the language is a passage; for him they are the divisions between the heavens. ¹⁴⁴

He offers his picture: the universe as fourteen spheres, seven heavens each enclosing the one inside it, at whose centre is a tiny point, the earth, inside which are the seven earths, with the Kursi (Footstool) surrounding all (al-Baqara 255). ¹⁴⁵ ¹⁴⁶ ¹⁴⁷ ¹⁴⁸ He says everything in the universe is rounded, mentions that Einstein said the universe is curved, and cites the verse on the night being wound over the day (al-Zumar 5). ¹⁴⁹ ¹⁵⁰ He draws on the hadiths forbidding the wrongful taking of a span of land, whose taker will be collared with it from seven earths, and on a prophetic prayer to the Lord of the seven heavens and seven earths, saying that although these hadiths forbid injustice they point to a cosmic fact. ¹⁴⁷ ¹⁵¹ ¹⁵² He says the study of the earth's interior by seismic waves in the late twentieth century showed it to be seven spheres: the crust, what lies beneath it, three mantles, the liquid core as the sixth and the solid core as the seventh, this being his own count. ¹⁵³ ¹⁵⁴ ¹⁵⁵

He then answers the exegetes' question on the verse of al-Baqara (al-Baqara 29), whether the earth was created before the heaven: God, he says, first created one earth and one heaven in a single moment, then differentiated the first earth into seven earths before differentiating the first heaven into seven heavens; this, for him, is why the earth comes in the singular in the Qur'an, since people see only one earth. ¹⁵⁶ ¹⁵⁷ ¹⁵⁸ ¹⁵⁹ ¹⁶⁰ ¹⁶¹

Episode 9: the centrality of the earth and the sending down of iron

He says the seven heavens are mentioned in seven verses of the Qur'an, naming among them verses of Fussilat, al-Mulk, Nuh and al-Naba', and holds that the number seven is exact here, not an intensive. ¹⁶² ¹⁶³ ¹⁶⁴ ¹⁶⁵ He reads 'seven heavens in layers' (al-Mulk 3) as concentric around one centre, not flat sheets one above another, and mentions the hadith that the seven heavens and seven earths in the Kursi are like a ring thrown in a desert. ¹⁶³ ¹⁶⁴ ¹⁶⁶ ¹⁶⁷

He takes up the centrality of the earth: modern science denied it, he says, when it showed the earth to be at the edge of the galaxy, some thirty thousand light years from its centre by his figure, but he infers from verses of the Qur'an and hadiths that the earth is at the centre of the universe. ¹⁶⁸ ¹⁶⁹ ¹⁷⁰ He argues from the verse on passing beyond the regions of the heavens and the earth (al-Rahman 33), saying the earth's diameter is under thirteen thousand kilometres and its regions can coincide with the vast regions of the heavens only if it is at the centre, and from the phrase 'the heavens and the earth and what is between them', which he says occurs in twenty verses, among them one in al-Ma'ida (al-Ma'ida 17). ¹⁷⁰ ¹⁷¹ ¹⁷² ¹⁷³ He says astronomers, for all the space flights, know no more than five per cent of what is in the observable part of the lowest heaven, so the unseen must be accepted. ¹⁷⁴ ¹⁷⁵

He then turns to the sending down of iron: iron, he says, is the only element after which a sura of the Qur'an is named, the early exegetes did not ask why, and the sura likens its sending down to the sending down of the Book and the Balance (al-Hadid 25). ¹⁷⁶ ¹⁷⁷ ¹⁷⁸ He explains nuclear fusion in the stars: hydrogen nuclei unite to form helium, the difference in mass is released as energy, and the sun's temperature is, by his figures, fifteen million degrees absolute at the core and six thousand at the surface. ¹⁷⁸ ¹⁷⁹ ¹⁸⁰ He says fusion in the sun goes no further than silicon and aluminium and never reaches iron, so that the earth, when it separated from the sun, was 'a heap of ash', as the outer planets beyond Mars remain; then iron from the explosion of giant stars came down, pierced the heap and settled at its heart, and the heat of its arrival melted it and differentiated it into seven earths; he counts this among the greatest signs of scientific miracle, since for him science reached it only at the end of the twentieth century. ¹⁸¹ ¹⁸² ¹⁸³ ¹⁸⁴ ¹⁸⁵

Episode 10: the spreading of the earth, and Mecca at the centre of the land

He returns to the sending down of iron, saying iron makes up more than thirty-five per cent of the earth's mass, and that the earth could not have become habitable without it, just as human life is not set right without the sending down of revelation. ¹⁸⁶ ¹⁸⁷ ¹⁸⁸ He says that in melting the earth God brought its atmosphere and its water out of its interior, citing the verses on spreading the earth and bringing forth its water and pasture (al-Nazi'at 30, 31); water then covered the earth, and God burst the floor of the covering ocean with volcanic eruption that built a mountain chain scientists call 'the mid-ocean ridge'. ¹⁸⁹ ¹⁹⁰

He says the first peak to rise above the water was a small volcanic island, the land of Mecca, on which the angels built the Ka'ba, and that the land then spread into a single continent scientists call 'the mother of continents', which God broke by rifts into the seven present continents. ¹⁹¹ ¹⁹² ¹⁹³ He cites a hadith he relates, that the Ka'ba was 'a mound on the water' from which the earth was spread, saying a khash'a is a small hillock and that dahw in classical Arabic means stretching, spreading and casting, not rounding as many imagine, and is for him an exact description of a volcano erupting. ¹⁹³ ¹⁹⁴ ¹⁹⁵ He notes that historians differ over who built the Ka'ba, Adam, Abraham or someone else, and holds himself that the angels built it and also al-Aqsa, citing the hadith that the first to circle the House were the angels and the hadith of forty years between the two mosques. ¹⁹⁵ ¹⁹⁶ ¹⁹⁷ He says the Night Journey from the Sacred Mosque to al-Aqsa (al-Isra' 1) came to affirm that al-Aqsa's sanctity is of the Ka'ba's sanctity, and rejects the idea that the gate of heaven is above al-Aqsa as a narrowing of God's power. ¹⁹⁸ ¹⁹⁹

He says Mecca lies exactly in the middle of the land, equidistant from the edges of the continents, a distance he gives as 13,600 kilometres and says he measured from satellite images. ²⁰⁰ He argues from a hadith he relates that the sanctuary is aligned with the seven heavens and seven earths, and from the hadith of al-Bayt al-Ma'mur in the seventh heaven directly above the Ka'ba, that Mecca lies on the axis of the whole universe. ²⁰⁰ ²⁰¹ ²⁰² ²⁰³ ²⁰⁴ He ends by saying the pilgrimage lets a Muslim, once in a lifetime at least, combine the blessing of the place with the blessing of the time, and mentions the verse of the first House set up for people (Al 'Imran 96). ²⁰⁵ ²⁰⁶

Episode 11: the positions of the stars

He repeats that the Qur'an is a book of guidance in creed, worship, morals and dealings, that it holds more than 1,200 verses on the heavens and earth, the phenomena of the cosmos, forms of life and the stages of the embryo, and that they did not come as direct scientific information because the human mind, in his view, cannot take in the whole of things at once. ²⁰⁷ ²⁰⁸ ²⁰⁹ He separates the descriptive verses, where only the conclusive is used, from the verses of creation, annihilation and resurrection. ²¹⁰ ²¹¹ ²¹²

He then explains the two verses of the oath by the positions of the stars (al-Waqi'a 75, 76), asking why God swore by their positions rather than by the stars themselves, and saying the negation in 'nay, I swear' strengthens the oath. ²¹³ ²¹⁴ ²¹⁵ His answer is that people never see the stars, only positions they have passed through: the sun, at an average distance he gives as a hundred and fifty million kilometres, sends light that arrives after eight and a third minutes, by which time it has moved on. ²¹⁵ ²¹⁶ ²¹⁷ ²¹⁸ He calls this distance a mercy: a little closer and the earth would burn, a little farther and life would freeze. ²¹⁹ ²¹⁶ He adds that light does not travel through the sky in a straight line because every body has its gravity, and links this to the Qur'an's describing movement in the sky as ascent ('uruj). ²²⁰ ²²¹ ²²² He makes 'the most important glimpse' the idea that the positions of the stars hold the edges of the lowest heaven together by God's will. ²²³ ²²⁴

Episode 12: al-Tariq and the stars that hide and sweep

He says the oath by the positions of the stars points, for him, to two facts: that their positions hold the edges of the lowest heaven together, and that God placed them at vast distances so that only the useful measure of light and warmth reaches us. ²²⁵ ²²⁶ He then turns to the opening of Surat al-Tariq (al-Tariq 1, 2, 3), giving the exegetes' account that the Arabs built walls round their towns and shut the gates at sunset, opening only to whoever knocked, so that anyone arriving by night was called a tariq; most of them took the oath to be by the stars in general, while he holds it is by a particular kind of star. ²²⁷ ²²⁸ ²²⁹ ²³⁰ ²³¹

He says astronomers discovered neutron stars in the late 1960s and early 1970s, stars that exploded and whose matter was compressed until electrons merged with protons, and that such a star is no more than eighteen to twenty kilometres across. ²³² ²³³ He puts their density at a billion tonnes per cubic centimetre and their spin at thirty turns a second, and says they send out radio waves that 'knock' on the sky as one knocks on a door, and that their recording by radio telescope sounds not like a heartbeat but like rapid knocking. ²³⁴ ²³⁵ ²³⁶ ²³⁷ For this reason he holds the Qur'anic name 'the piercing star that knocks' more exact than the astronomers' 'pulsars', since it pierces the darkness of the sky with its light and its surface with its knocks. ²³⁸ ²³⁹

He then explains the oath by 'the retreating ones, running, hiding' (al-Takwir 15, 16), citing the early exegetes' views that these are stars that appear by night and vanish by day, or gazelles hiding in their lairs, and saying the second is unbefitting a divine oath. ²⁴⁰ ²⁴¹ ²⁴² He says that some years after the neutron stars astronomers noticed unseen points towards which threads of X-rays move and called them black holes, which are not holes but matter so dense that light cannot escape, one of which may govern a whole galaxy; he holds that the Qur'an's description, khanis because it is not seen and kanis because it sweeps up what lies in its path, is more exact than the astronomers' name. ²⁴³ ²⁴⁴ ²⁴⁵ ²⁴⁶ ²⁴⁷

Episode 13: the heaven that returns

He dwells on the oath by 'the heaven with its return' (al-Tariq 11), saying the early exegetes explained the return as rain, for him the most important thing that comes back from the sky, especially in deserts, but asking why it did not say 'the heaven with rain'. ²⁴⁸ ²⁴⁹ ²⁵⁰ He counts five 'inner' forms of return: the echo of sound, without which, but for the properties of the atmosphere, people could not hear one another; rain; the return of heat, where he says the earth's rocks give back after sunset 97.5 per cent of the heat they absorbed; what the winds bring back of dust, pollen and minerals; and the reflection of radio and television waves from 'the ionized layer'. ²⁵¹ ²⁵² ²⁵³ ²⁵⁴ ²⁵⁵ ²⁵⁶ ²⁵⁷ He names 'outer' forms in which the atmosphere turns back cosmic rays and burns up millions of meteors. ²⁵⁸ ²⁵⁹ ²⁶⁰ ²⁶¹ He says climatologists call the lowest layer of the atmosphere the 'troposphere', which he explains as 'the sphere of return', though they have not read the Qur'an. ²⁶² ²⁶³

Episode 14: the heaven with its weave, and provision in the heaven

He explains the oath by 'the heaven with its pathways' (dhat al-hubuk, al-Dhariyat 7), saying hubuk in the language means something tightly made, as in close-woven cloth, and also undulation, like the ripples of sand on a beach. ²⁶⁴ ²⁶⁵ ²⁶⁶ ²⁶⁷ ²⁶⁸ He sees in it a reference to the tight construction of the sky in masses, distances, speeds and gravity, the earth governing the moon and the sun eleven planets and more than fifty-five moons by his count, and to the range of densities: the earth about five and a half grams per cubic centimetre, the sun a little denser than water, then the knocking stars, then the black holes, densest of all. ²⁶⁶ ²⁶⁹ ²⁷⁰ ²⁶⁸ ²⁷¹ ²⁷² He makes this range of attracting forces the means by which God holds the heavens lest they cease (Fatir 41). ²⁷³ ²⁷⁴

He then explains the verse 'and in the heaven is your provision and what you are promised' (al-Dhariyat 22), noting its reading as rain among people living in a desert with no water but rain, and its reading as God's decree in apportioning provision; he calls both correct and adds a third dimension: the stars are cosmic furnaces in which forms of matter and energy are made from hydrogen, and the elements heavier than iron form in stars larger than the sun when they explode, and then come down to earth. ²⁷⁵ ²⁷⁶ ²⁷⁷ ²⁷⁸ ²⁷⁹ ²⁸⁰ He sees in the making of everything from hydrogen, a positive nucleus and a negative electron, a sign of pairing in creation and of the Creator's oneness. ²⁸¹ ²⁸² He relates from astronomers that a star collapsed on itself into a vast mass of diamond many times larger than the earth, and draws the lesson that provision is from God and is not to be sought through disobedience. ²⁸³ ²⁸⁴ ²⁸⁵

Episode 15: 'as if climbing into the sky', and the dazzled eyes

He explains the verse on the breast opened to Islam and the breast made tight 'as if climbing into the sky' (al-An'am 125), saying even a simile in the Qur'an remains scientifically exact for him, that air pressure and oxygen fall with height, and that above the cooling layer the temperature rises to six hundred degrees Celsius by his figure. ²⁸⁶ ²⁸⁷ ²⁸⁸ ²⁸⁹ He describes what befalls someone who climbs without protection: the gases and fluids in the body expand, the body being seventy per cent water, until the vessels tear, then suffocation for lack of oxygen; he says the costliest item in space flight is the suit that protects the astronaut from this. ²⁹⁰ ²⁹¹ ²⁹² ²⁹³ He asks who taught the Prophet this fact, which people grasped only in the age of space exploration in the second half of the twentieth century. ²⁹⁴ ²⁹⁵

He then dwells on the two verses of Surat al-Hijr (al-Hijr 14, 15), which say that were a gate of the sky opened to the unbelievers and they kept ascending through it they would say their eyes had been dazzled; he counts five glimpses in them: a gate is not opened onto emptiness, so the sky is a structure, not void; 'they kept on' (zallu) implies ascent in broad daylight; 'ascending' describes winding movement in the sky; and 'our eyes are dazzled' points to the darkness of the universe beyond the layer of daylight. ²⁹⁶ ²⁹⁷ ²⁹⁸ ²⁹⁹ ³⁰⁰ ³⁰¹ He says the layer of daylight is thin, no more than a hundred to two hundred kilometres thick, that visible light scatters on molecules of air and water vapour to give white daylight, and that whoever passes beyond it sees the universe in total darkness, with the sun and stars as faint points. ³⁰² ³⁰³ ³⁰⁴

Episode 16: 'on the earth are signs', and the spreading of the earth

He says he chose some twenty verses on the heavens for the previous episodes, that the earth is mentioned in more than 460 verses, and begins with 'and on the earth are signs for those with certainty' (al-Dhariyat 20). ³⁰⁵ ⁵ ³⁰⁶ He says 'earth' comes in the Qur'an in three senses: the whole planet when set against the sky, sun or moon, the rocky shell and dry land, or the layer of soil. ³⁰⁶ ³⁰⁷ Among the signs of the planet he counts its reckoned distance from the sun; its size, which if larger would raise the pressure of the atmosphere and if smaller would not hold its air and water; the tilt of its axis, which brings the seasons; the sending down of iron upon it; the share of dry land, which he puts at a quarter of its surface; the rock cycle and the movement of plates that build mountain chains; and the make-up of the soil that lets it grow. ³⁰⁸ ³⁰⁹ ³¹⁰ ³¹¹ ³¹² ³¹³ ³¹⁴ ³¹⁵ He holds that such exactness declares the earth could not have come about by pure chance. ³¹⁶ ³¹⁷

He then returns to the two verses of spreading (al-Nazi'at 30, 31), saying 'earth' here is the rocky shell, that iron makes up ninety per cent of the earth's core and falls to five or six per cent in its crust, and that the melting of the ash heap released oxygen and hydrogen, which combined to form the earth's water. ³¹⁸ ³¹⁹ ³²⁰ ³²¹ He puts the earth's water at about 1,400 million cubic kilometres and says no other planet is known to be so endowed, so that scientists call it the blue planet; scientists long wondered where the water came from until, studying volcanoes in the late twentieth century, they found water vapour to be most of what rises from them, over seventy per cent in some. ³²¹ ³²² ³²³ ³²⁴

Episode 17: water and pasture brought forth, and the earth that splits

He says Surat al-Nazi'at, like the other Meccan suras of the thirtieth part, is among the suras richest in cosmic phenomena, and that scientists once supposed the earth's water came from comets whose ice melted, a hypothesis that for him has fallen, since the water came from inside the earth with volcanoes. ³²⁵ ³²⁶ ³²⁷ ³²⁸ He says the Bedouin who heard the two verses in the Prophet's time understood springs bursting in the desert and land turning green after rain, whereas science, as he puts it, says the second gas rising from volcanoes is carbon dioxide, a poisonous gas God made 'the first building block' of food chains. ³²⁹ ³³⁰ ³³¹ He explains photosynthesis in the green leaf, which he calls 'a giant factory': it splits carbon dioxide and water by the sun's energy, releases oxygen, and binds carbon to hydrogen to make sugars, starches and oils; he sees in this a new dimension of the word 'its pasture'. ³³¹ ³³² ³³³ ³³⁴ ³³⁵ ³³⁶

He then explains the oath by 'the earth that splits' (al-Tariq 12): sad' in the language is a crack, and in science the fracture along which the earth moves; the early scholars read it as the soil splitting for the plant, which he explains through clay minerals, fine sheets that water penetrates so that the soil swells, thins and cracks for the tender shoot, and he calls this reading 'a hundred per cent correct'. ³³⁷ ³³⁸ ³³⁹ ³⁴⁰ ³⁴¹ ³⁴² He adds that after the Second World War scientists went down to the ocean floors in search of minerals and found a vast network of rifts encircling the earth, between 65 and 150 kilometres deep by his figures, which scientists liken to the seam on a tennis ball and which he makes a vent for the heat of radioactive elements inside the earth. ³⁴² ³⁴³ ³⁴⁴ ³⁴⁵ He concludes that a verse comes in fixed words in which the people of each age see a meaning, the meanings widening 'in a harmony that knows no contradiction', and that those after us may see in it what we do not. ³⁴⁶ ³⁴⁷

Episode 18: the kindled sea

He explains the oath by 'the kindled sea' (al-Tur 6): masjur in the language is something heated until it glows; the early scholars took it as the seas set ablaze on the Day of Resurrection (al-Takwir 6), but he holds that the oaths at the opening of Surat al-Tur are all by things that exist now, the Mount, the inscribed Book, the much-frequented House and the raised roof, so the kindled sea must be a present reality. ³⁴⁸ ³⁴⁹ ³⁵⁰ ³⁵¹ He notes that lexicographers found 'filled' and 'held back' among the meanings of sajara and read it as the sea filled with water and held back from the land, a meaning he accepts; he says 97.5 per cent of the earth's water is in the seas and oceans, that the ice at the South Pole reaches four kilometres thick, and that the water running on land is no more than two tenths of one per cent by his figure. ³⁵¹ ³⁵² ³⁵³ ³⁵⁴ ³⁵⁵

He then says that after the Second World War scientists reached the ocean floors and found them 'truly kindled with fire': rifts pierce the thin rocky shell under the ocean, which he puts at five to eight kilometres thick, and magma pours through them at a thousand degrees Celsius, the water not quenching it nor it boiling all the water away; he gives the Red Sea as an example. ³⁵⁶ ³⁵⁷ ³⁵⁸ ³⁵⁹ ³⁶⁰ ³⁶¹ He says this was discovered only in the late 1960s and early 1970s, and that volcanic activity on the ocean floors exceeds that on land many times over. ³⁶¹ ³⁶² He cites a hadith forbidding travel by sea except for a pilgrim, a visitor to Mecca or a fighter, because under the sea is fire, and says the hadith does not forbid sea travel but makes it a risk taken only for a great purpose, among which he counts, under jihad, seeking knowledge, preaching, diplomacy, medicine and trade. ³⁶² ³⁶³ ³⁶⁴ ³⁶⁵ ³⁶⁶

Episode 19: the earth reduced at its edges

He says the earth occurs in 462 verses and dwells on the two verses on reducing the earth from its edges (al-Ra'd 41, al-Anbiya' 44). ³⁶⁷ ³⁶⁸ He sets out several views: that the earth's spin made it bulge at the equator and flatten at the poles, with a difference he gives as forty-three kilometres between the two diameters; that erosion wears the mountain tops and drops them into the lowlands; that the seas encroach on the land; and that ocean floors sink beneath the continents and melt; he calls all of these correct. ³⁶⁹ ³⁷⁰ ³⁷¹ ³⁷² He then says that 'the most eloquent' thing he found is that the primordial earth was, by his account, at least a hundred times larger than the present one (needs_source), and that it shrinks on every side through the light gases and volcanic dust that escape its gravity. ³⁷² ³⁷³ ³⁷⁴

He explains this by the sun's losing some of its mass every second as energy, and by gravity between two bodies depending on their masses and the distance between them: the earth must lose a matching share of its mass so that its distance from the sun stays fixed at about a hundred and fifty million kilometres, neither drawing closer and burning nor moving away and freezing. ³⁷⁵ ³⁷⁶ ³⁷⁷ ³⁷⁸ He links the constancy of this distance to the verse that the number of months is twelve (al-Tawba 36), and says this fact alone is enough for him as testimony to God's boundless power and the precision of creation. ³⁷⁹ ³⁸⁰

Episode 20: the earth a cradle and the mountains pegs

He says mountains are mentioned in more than forty verses, and begins with the opening of Surat al-Naba' (al-Naba' 6, 7), seeing the two verses as a reply to those who deny the resurrection: is it not enough that God made the earth a cradle and the mountains pegs, as proof of His power to raise the dead? ³⁸¹ ³⁸² ³⁸³ ³⁸⁴ He rejects reading 'cradle' to mean the earth is flat, and says the meaning for him is that the earth began with extremely rugged relief, so God set the agents of erosion, wind, water, ice, gravity and the swing of temperatures, to break the rocks, form soil and turn mountains into plateaus and plains. ³⁸⁵ ³⁸⁶ ³⁸⁷ ³⁸⁸

He says that in the 1980s he wrote a book in English on mountains in the Qur'an as 'a paper of da'wa' for English speakers, and that he gathered the definitions of mountains in books of geology and geography and in dictionaries and found that all describe them as protrusions on the earth's surface, whereas the Qur'an describes them as pegs. ³⁸⁹ ³⁹⁰ He says scientists began to ask in the late nineteenth century whether mountains extend into the crust and were sure only in the late twentieth, and that a peak like Everest, a little under nine kilometres high by his figure, has a root that pierces the rocky shell, which may be more than eighty kilometres thick, and floats in the weak zone as icebergs float in water. ³⁹⁰ ³⁹¹ ³⁹² ³⁹³ He says the mountains fix the plates of the rocky shell, which would otherwise move too fast for soil, groundwater or life. ³⁹⁴ ³⁹⁵ ³⁹⁶

Episode 21: the mountains anchored, and firm hills lest it sway

He explains the verse 'and the mountains He anchored, as provision for you and your livestock' (al-Nazi'at 32, 33), saying the pronoun in 'anchored it' refers for him to the spread earth of the two preceding verses, that is, to the plates of dry land rather than the whole planet. ³⁹⁷ ³⁹⁸ ³⁹⁹ He explains how mountains form in the earth scientists' account: when two plates collide the ocean floor sinks beneath the continent, its sediments are scraped onto the riding plate, the floor partly melts and volcanoes erupt, and the mountain forms from the mixture of sedimentary, volcanic and igneous rocks, binding the continent to the ocean floor 'as a nail binds two planks'. ⁴⁰⁰ ⁴⁰¹ ⁴⁰² ⁴⁰³ He says plate movement was in the past many times more violent than now, and that the role of mountains in fixing the plates became known only at the end of the twentieth century. ⁴⁰⁴ ⁴⁰⁵

He then explains the verse on casting firm hills in the earth lest it sway with you (al-Nahl 15) in two ways: fixing the plates of the rocky shell, and lessening the planet's wobble on its axis; he says God distributed the mountain chains exactly, north to south like the mountains of the western Americas or east to west like those of central Europe and North Africa, which scientists, he says, liken to the lead weight on a car wheel. ⁴⁰⁶ ⁴⁰⁷ ⁴⁰⁸ ⁴⁰⁹ He sees in the mention of rivers and ways alongside the hills a pointer to the link between the formation of rivers and passes and the formation of mountains. ⁴¹⁰ ⁴¹¹

Episode 22: streaks white and red, and 'only the knowing fear God'

He explains the two verses of Surat Fatir (Fatir 27, 28), seeing in the sending down of water a reference to the water cycle, without which the earth's water would go stale, and in fruits of differing colours from one soil and one water a reference to what God placed in every seed, the power to choose the elements of the soil that suit it; he says many exegetes did not notice this. ⁴¹² ⁴¹³ ⁴¹⁴ ⁴¹⁵ ⁴¹⁶ He says the 'streaks' (judad) are the dykes cutting through rock, and that the colours of the verse are the basis of today's classification of igneous rocks: acid and ultra-acid rocks such as granite tending to white and red, basic and ultrabasic rocks tending to dark green and black, and intermediate rocks between them; he explains that igneous rocks are the primary ones from which sedimentary and metamorphic rocks came. ⁴¹⁷ ⁴¹⁸ ⁴¹⁹ ⁴²⁰ ⁴²¹ He says the close of the verse points to the way the colours of people and animals are affected by the rocks and food of their surroundings. ⁴²² ⁴²³

He says that 'the scholars' in the verse, with all his respect for scholars of the Sharia, points here to the natural scientists who study water, plants, rocks, people and animals. ⁴²⁴ ⁴²⁵ He sets out his picture of human knowledge as an indivisible 'pyramid': its base the pure and applied sciences, as the means of stewardship, each with its philosophy, philosophy in Islam being for him the love of wisdom; then the humanities, languages, history, arts, economics, administration and law; and at its summit revelation; a person specializes in one level and must have some grasp of the rest. ⁴²⁵ ⁴²⁶ ⁴²⁷ ⁴²⁸ ⁴²⁹

Episode 23: 'and We sent down iron'

He gives the episode to the verse of iron (al-Hadid 25), saying iron is one of 105 elements known to people and the only one after which a sura is named, the fifty-seventh in the mushaf. ⁴³⁰ ⁴³¹ He retells the earth's origin as he sees it: a heap of ash separated from the sun, then iron came down upon it, settled at its heart and melted it until seven earths were differentiated; he says the earth's core is a huge sphere ninety per cent of which is iron. ⁴³² ⁴³³ ⁴³⁴ ⁴³⁵ ⁴³⁶

He answers the question of the likeness between sending down iron and sending down revelation: just as without divine guidance a person cannot know who he is, who his Creator is, what his mission is and where he is going, the earth could not have become habitable without iron, which brought out its air and water, gave it the gravity to hold them and reduced its wobble. ⁴³⁷ ⁴³⁸ ⁴³⁹ ⁴⁴⁰ ⁴⁴¹ He adds that iron is part of the red matter in the blood of people and animals, and that its atomic nucleus is bound more tightly than that of any other element; he sees in this the meaning of 'in it is great might', in its being the backbone of civil and military industry the meaning of 'benefits for people', and in the close of the verse a call to jihad. ⁴³⁹ ⁴⁴² ⁴⁴³ ⁴⁴⁴

Episode 24: the earth a place of settlement

He explains the verse of Ghafir (Ghafir 64) and the verse of al-Naml (al-Naml 61), saying that 'a place of settlement' (qarar) does not mean the earth is still, for it moves in dozens of ways, but that it is a planet on whose surface life can thrive. ⁴⁴⁵ ⁴⁴⁶ He says the earth's core is a huge sphere of iron, solid and liquid, ninety per cent iron, nine per cent nickel and one per cent light elements, without which the planet would wobble too much for life, and that the plates of the rocky shell slid 'like someone skating on ice' until God anchored them with mountains; he mentions a sound hadith that the earth swayed when it was created and was steadied by the mountains. ⁴⁴⁷ ⁴⁴⁸ ⁴⁴⁹ He pauses on 'and He shaped you and made your shapes good', saying the embryo passes through stages of formation governed by the genetic code, which occupies a minute space in the cell nucleus, and that the One who shapes in the womb is God alone. ⁴⁵⁰ ⁴⁵¹

He links 'and placed a barrier between the two seas' to the meeting of fresh and salt water and promises to explain it later. ⁴⁵² ⁴⁵³ He says a famous British scientist, Stephen Hawking, wrote in a book on astronomy that an explosion by nature scatters matter, and that an explosion that produced a structure of such exactness can only have come from thought and intelligence beyond human capacities; he offers this as a Western scientist's testimony that the universe is not the product of chance. ⁴⁵⁴ ⁴⁵⁵

Episode 25: the water cycle, and the water you drink

He says water is the origin of life, that most of the bodies of living things are water, that no vital process takes place without it, and that early life was created in water. ⁴⁵⁶ ⁴⁵⁷ He says some exegetes were puzzled by the pairing of bringing water out of the earth with sending it down from the sky, and that the link was understood, for him, only in the twentieth century, when it was established that the earth's water came out of its interior as vapour with volcanoes and then condensed and fell. ⁴⁵⁸ ⁴⁵⁹ ⁴⁶⁰ He explains the water cycle: the sun evaporates water from seas and elsewhere, winds carry it as clouds, other winds bring 'condensation nuclei' of dust and salt, droplets grow and fall, and water runs over the land, breaking rocks and forming soil, before flowing into the seas; without this cycle water would go stale and spoil. ⁴⁶¹ ⁴⁶² ⁴⁶³ ⁴⁶⁴ He cites the verse of al-Baqara on the creation of the heavens and earth, the turning of the winds and the clouds held in service (al-Baqara 164). ⁴⁶⁵ ⁴⁶⁶

He says most evaporation is from the seas, yet when rain falls God gives the land more than evaporated from it, an excess he puts in this episode at seventy thousand cubic kilometres, and he cites a hadith he relates that no year has less rain than another, but God distributes it. ⁴⁶⁷ ⁴⁶⁸ ⁴⁶⁹ ⁴⁷⁰ He says the saltiness of the seas grew with the water cycle and keeps what dies in them from rotting. ⁴⁶³ ⁴⁷¹ He then explains the verses of al-Waqi'a on the water you drink (al-Waqi'a 68, 69, 70), saying a small change in the make-up of the atmosphere would make rain fall bitter, and mentions a prophetic prayer on drinking that praises God for making water sweet, and the hadith 'of My servants some have become believers in Me and some unbelievers' about those who ascribe rain to the stars. ⁴⁷² ⁴⁷³ ⁴⁷⁴ ⁴⁷⁵ ⁴⁷⁶

Episode 26: water in measure lodged in the earth, and the tailbone

He explains the verse of al-Mu'minun on water sent down in measure and lodged in the earth (al-Mu'minun 18), putting the yearly evaporation from the earth's surface at about six hundred thousand cubic kilometres, five hundred thousand from the seas and about a hundred thousand from the land, and saying the land receives with the rain sixty-five thousand cubic kilometres more than evaporated from it. ⁴⁷⁷ ⁴⁷⁸ ⁴⁷⁹ He reads 'in measure' to mean that a little more rain would make it a punishment, not a mercy, and mentions floods in South America, the Philippines and the ocean islands. ⁴⁸⁰ ⁴⁸¹ He says God differentiated rocks in porosity and permeability, making some reservoirs for water, oil and gas and others solid, that these reservoirs were created hundreds of millions of years before humankind, and that 'and We are able to take it away' warns against relying on stored water, which a volcanic eruption or an earthquake could take away. ⁴⁸² ⁴⁸³ ⁴⁸⁴ ⁴⁸⁵

He then explains 'and We sent down from the sky blessed water' (Qaf 9), saying rainwater is the purest water in nature and dissolves a little salt as it falls so that it becomes palatable, unlike distilled water, which harms the drinker because it dissolves the body's salts. ⁴⁸⁶ ⁴⁸⁷ ⁴⁸⁸ He says the Qur'an likens the resurrection to the sprouting of plants (Qaf 11) and returns to the hadith of the tailbone, describing the appearance of the 'primitive streak' on the embryo's outer layer on its fifteenth day, the passage of cells through it to specialize and form the organs, and its withdrawal to the coccyx; he says scientists tried to destroy this bone by boiling, burning and pounding and could not (needs_source). ⁴⁸⁹ ⁴⁹⁰ ⁴⁹¹ ⁴⁹² ⁴⁹³ ⁴⁹⁴

Episode 27: the fertilizing winds, and water led into springs

He explains the verse of the fertilizing winds (al-Hijr 22), saying many exegetes took it as the pollination of plants, and that while he accepts the winds' role in carrying pollen, the meaning for him is the seeding of clouds with condensation nuclei, since the verse goes on to the sending down of water. ⁴⁹⁵ ⁴⁹⁶ ⁴⁹⁷ He says 'and you are not its keepers' points to water stored in the earth's rocks, a mercy for desert dwellers, and that the knowledge that this water comes from rain was gained only in the late nineteenth century. ⁴⁹⁸ ⁴⁹⁹ ⁵⁰⁰ ⁵⁰¹ He mentions the two verses of al-Furqan on pure water (al-Furqan 48, 49). ⁵⁰² ⁵⁰³

He then explains the verse of al-Zumar (al-Zumar 21) and tells how a member of the Arabic Language Academy in Egypt, from Syria and a Christian, read the verse and, trying to recall it, lost the word 'fa-salakahu' ('and He threaded it'); he put twenty alternatives in its place, none of which carried the meaning, and came to ask about it. ⁵⁰⁴ ⁵⁰⁵ ⁵⁰⁶ He says water is not stored in the crust as pools or rivers, as many imagine, but as fine capillary threads between the rock grains, resembling wire in shape and movement; rainwater moves down until it finds pores that let it move sideways, and the reservoir is constantly renewed by rain. ⁵⁰⁶ ⁵⁰⁷ ⁵⁰⁸ ⁵⁰⁹ He ends with the life cycle of the plant, from green to yellow to stubble, as a reminder that permanence belongs to God alone and that human life is a stage ending in death, then resurrection and reckoning. ⁵¹⁰ ⁵¹¹ ⁵¹²

Episode 28: 'and We made from water every living thing'

He says 97.5 per cent of the earth's water is in the seas and oceans, that half of the rest is ice over the poles and mountain tops and the other half stored in the rocks of the crust, and that all that flows in the earth's rivers is less than two hundredths of one per cent of its water; he distinguishes porosity, the spaces between rock grains, from permeability, the connection between those spaces. ⁵¹³ ⁵¹⁴ ⁵¹⁵ ⁵¹⁶ He cites the verse on water sinking away at the close of Surat al-Mulk (al-Mulk 30). ⁵¹⁷

He then dwells on the close of the verse of joining and parting, 'and We made from water every living thing' (al-Anbiya' 30), saying water makes up more than ninety per cent of the weight of a human embryo, seventy per cent of an adult man's and between sixty and sixty-five per cent of an adult woman's, and that digestion, photosynthesis and metabolism do not take place without it. ⁵¹⁸ ⁵¹⁹ ⁵²⁰ ⁵²¹ He says the oldest trace of life on earth goes back 3,800 million years and was in water, and that the oldest trace of life on land is no more than five hundred million years old by his figure. ⁵²² ⁵²³

Episode 29: the two seas and the barrier

He says the cosmic references in the Qur'an number more than 1,200, about a fifth of its verses by his estimate, and sums up the Qur'an's precedence on water as he sees it: its origin inside the earth, its cycle and its storage in rock. ⁵²⁴ ⁵²⁵ ⁵²⁶ He then says water is the greatest solvent people know, yet its masses, when they meet, do not mix completely, and explains the verse of Fatir on the two seas, sweet and salt (Fatir 12): fresh water is less dense and floats on salt water for kilometres, brackish water forms at its edges as a barrier, and three environments result, each with its own properties, life and sediments, and each may be enclosed by an 'electric fence' of ions. ⁵²⁷ ⁵²⁸ ⁵²⁹ ⁵³⁰ ⁵³¹ ⁵³² ⁵³³

He holds that many exegetes erred in taking the verses of Surat al-Rahman on the two seas let loose (al-Rahman 19, 20, 22) as the meeting of river and sea, because pearls and coral, as he puts it, live only in warm, shallow salt water; for him the verses describe sea meeting sea. ⁵³⁴ ⁵³⁵ ⁵³⁶ He says photographing the oceans from space in the colours of the spectrum showed neighbouring masses of water meeting without mixing, and that water is also layered horizontally by density and salinity, so that one sea holds several environments; he takes the 'barrier' of the verse of al-Naml (al-Naml 61) to cover both cases. ⁵³⁷ ⁵³⁸ ⁵³⁹ ⁵⁴⁰ ⁵⁴¹ At its close he says the next episode is the last of the series; it is not in the archive. ⁷

A series of thirty audio episodes by Zaghloul El-Naggar on the Assabile archive, in which he sets out the rules and reasons for the 'scientific miracle' in the Prophet's Sunna, then explains hadith on the earth, the sea, the moon, eclipses, the new moons, medicine, food, sleep, rain, suckling, heredity, the tooth-stick, the tailbone, the joints, dates and the signs of the Hour in the light of what he takes to be scientific fact; all of it is his own account.
