Overview

Yazid ibn al-Muhallab, an Umayyad governor, appointed by Sulayman ibn Abd al-Malik over Khurasan and the war in Iraq. He was killed after a dispute with the caliphate, in a battle with Maslama ibn Abd al-Malik 1, 2.

His governorship

al-Tabari reports that Qutayba ibn Muslim feared that Sulayman would appoint Yazid ibn al-Muhallab over Khurasan, so he wrote to him congratulating him on the caliphate 3. Then Sulayman wrote his letter of appointment over Khurasan, and Yazid set out for it, and left al-Jarrah ibn Abd Allah al-Hakami as his deputy at Wasit 1. Sulayman also appointed him over the war in Iraq 4.

Jurjan

Yazid entered Jurjan without opposition, and the marzban fled. Yazid took the people out to al-Buhayra, and appointed Mukhallad ibn Yazid over Khurasan 5. He refused any truce unless Sul came down to his judgement, according to the report 6.

Flight and return to Iraq

Ali ibn Artat sent Yazid in chains in a ship, with Waki' ibn Hassan ibn Abi Sud, according to the report 7. Then Yazid fled from the prison of Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz 8, and went on his flight until he passed by the event of al-Zuqaq 9. Then he came to Basra, and no horseman or tribe of theirs passed him without moving aside from his path 10. He left Basra, appointed his brother Marwan over it, and descended to Wasit 11.

His death

al-Tabari reports that Yazid was killed in Safar, in the year 102 AH as printed in the annals 12. He was killed in the battle with Maslama, and with him were killed al-Sumay' and Muhammad ibn al-Muhallab, according to the report 2. His head was sent to Yazid ibn Abd al-Malik with Khalid ibn al-Walid (may God be pleased with him) ibn Uqba 13.

Notes for researchers

  • Most of the reports here are "according to the report": al-Tabari transmits them from named narrators, above all Abu Mikhnaf. They have not yet been compared with other sources.
  • The only year mentioned (102) is taken from the marginal note of the printed annals on page 123, and its order has not been reconciled with the events of page 87, which mention the year 101.
  • The references use the scan page number; the printed numbering has not been read accurately.
  • Some reports have been left out because their text is garbled in the OCR (for example pages 91, 111, 127 and 138), and they need the page images checked before they are added.

Jahm ibn Zahr al-Ju'fi

Jahm ibn Zahr al-Ju'fi, Yazid ibn al-Muhallab's champion; he retook breached Jurjan, then led the hide-ladder ascent of Wajah — 'if I am spared life, let me not be spared death' — killed the gate-keepers, raised the takbir behind the enemy at mid-afternoon, and drove the captives to Wadi Jurjan where they were slaughtered till the blood ran.
