Yazid ibn al-Muhallab's Campaigns and al-Mufaddal's Succession

The Muhallab's son Yazid succeeded, campaigning widely — al-Buttam opened by his own son Mukhallad. Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Abbas ibn Rabi'a of Abd al-Muttalib's house, fleeing with Ibn al-Ash'ath's remnant, reached Herat, killed al-Ruqad al-Mutakki and levied kharaj; Yazid beat him, forbade pursuit, and the Hashimi fled to Sind. On Yazid's Khwarizm raid the troops wore the captives' clothes and perished of cold. Then al-Hajjaj gave Khurasan to al-Mufaddal ibn al-Muhallab, who retook breached Badghis, Shuman and others, dividing the spoils.

Overview

Yazid ibn al-Muhallab succeeded his father al-Muhallab in Khurasan and undertook many campaigns. After him al-Hajjaj appointed his brother al-Mufaddal ibn al-Muhallab. 1

The campaigns of Yazid

Al-Batm was taken by Mukhallad ibn Yazid. Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Abbas went to Herat after the defeat of Ibn al-Ash'ath, killed al-Ruqad al-Mutakki and collected the land tax. Yazid marched against him, they fought and he routed them, and ordered that they not be pursued; the Hashimi went to Sind. Yazid raided Khwarazm and took captives, and the troops put on the clothes of the captives and died of the cold. 1

He conquered Badhghis after it had rebelled, and took spoils which he divided among the people. 1

Waki' ibn Hassan's Nine Months over Khurasan

Waki' held Khurasan sole; Sulayman meant to confirm him but was told fitna raises him and the jama'a lowers him — too rough, too bedouin, a man who called for a basin and urinated in public. Nine months till Yazid ibn al-Muhallab came appointed; Mukhallad his son called Waki' to account — 'yield God's wealth' — 'was I God's treasurer?' — and jailed him. Mukhallad took al-Buttam, left when they breached, then wheeled back and entered it with Jahm ibn Zahr, who took wealth and golden idols — Buttam's folk trace their mawla-status to him.
