Overview

Qays ibn Sa'd ibn Ubada al-Ansari al-Khazraji al-Sa'idi, Abu al-Fadl. He was one of the excellent Companions, a man of judgement and stratagem in war, and bore the banner of the Ansar with the Prophet ﷺ 1.

His family and kunya

His mother was Fukayha bint Ubayd ibn Dulaym ibn Haritha. It is said that he was called Abu Abd Allah or Abu Abd al-Malik 1. He came from a house of leadership among his people 1.

His qualities

Ibn al-Athir describes him as "one of the excellent Companions, one of the shrewdest and most generous of the Arabs," a man of sound judgement and stratagem in war, with resolve and courage, and a nobleman among his people whom none could repel 1.

His standing with the Prophet

Anas ibn Malik (may God be pleased with him) reports that Qays held a place with the Prophet like that of a chief of police to a ruler, in the matters that fell to him 1.

The banner of the Ansar

Ibn Shihab al-Zuhri said that Qays ibn Sa'd bore the banner of the Ansar with the Messenger of God 1. Ibn al-Athir mentions that Ibn Shihab said this, and that what al-Bukhari reports about "Qays ibn Sa'd ibn Thabit" is an error that arose from a misreading, and should be read as "Ibn Sa'd ibn Ubada" 1.

For young visitors

Qays ibn Sa'd ibn Ubada was one of the Ansar. He was wise and sound in judgement, and in some expeditions he bore the banner of the Ansar with the Prophet.

Notes for researchers

  • The text about Qays says that "he was my partner in the pre-Islamic period." This is a report from Ibn al-Athir, from the statement of a Companion named in the chain. It is presented as a report and has not been settled here.
  • Al-Zuhri's statement about the banner, and Ibn al-Athir's note on al-Bukhari's misreading, should be checked against the authorized edition of al-Bukhari itself before they are relied on.
