Overview

al-Sultan al-Mansur Sayf al-Din Qalawun. He was atabeg to al-Malik al-Adil Badr al-Din Salamish, who was seven years old, when his brother al-Malik al-Sa'id was deposed and sent to Karak. Salamish was then removed from the sultanate without dispute in Rajab 678 AH, and Qalawun took the sultanate and was titled al-Malik al-Mansur. 2

In 680 AH Tatar troops reached Syria; he went out to fight them, and victory went to the Muslims. In 688 AH he took Tripoli by the sword; it had been in Frankish hands since 503 AH. He died in Dhu al-Qa'da 689 AH, and his son al-Malik al-Ashraf Salah al-Din Khalil became sultan. 2

According to al-Maqrizi

Al-Maqrizi says that the Mansuri hospital and its complex were built on the site of the small western palace, and that inside the complex stands the Mansuri dome, in which the kings are buried. 3

He also says that al-Malik al-Mansur Qalawun began building the hospital, a madrasa and a mausoleum there, and that the works were overseen by the amir Ala' al-Din Sanjar al-Shuja'i, administrator of the realms. 4

He says that the al-Nasiriyya madrasa stands beside the minaret of the Mansuri dome. 5

The killing of al-Malik al-Ashraf Khalil in 693 AH

In 693 the amir Baydara murdered al-Ashraf Salah al-Din Khalil as he sat alone after the hunt, was enthroned as al-Malik al-Qahir, then the Khasakiyya under Kitbugha routed and killed him and restored al-Nasir Muhammad; the vizier Ibn al-Sal'us was seized and stripped — warned in verse 'beware the bite of al-Shuja'i', he died of it — and when al-Shuja'i besieged Kitbugha in the Citadel the sultan's mamluks killed him and paraded him through the town to public joy.
