Nu'aym ibn Abdullah (al-Nahham)

نعيم بن عبد الله (النحّام)

A Qurashi of Banu Adi nicknamed al-Nahham because the Prophet ﷺ said he entered Paradise and heard a nahma (cough) from Nu'aym; al-Bukhari says he had companionship, and Mus'ab al-Zubayri says his conversion was before Umar's but he did not emigrate until shortly before the conquest of Mecca because he supported the widows and orphans of Banu Adi.

Overview

Nu'aym ibn Abd Allah ibn Usayd al-Qurashi al-Adawi, known as al-Nahham. He was given that name because the Prophet said to him: "I entered Paradise and heard a humming (nahma) of bliss" 1. His mother was Fakhita bint Harb ibn Abd Shams, as Khalifa said 1. al-Bukhari said: he has companionship with the Prophet 1.

His Islam and migration

Mus'ab al-Zubayri said: his Islam came before Umar's, but he did not migrate until shortly before the conquest of Mecca, because he was spending on the widows and orphans of the Banu Adi. When he wanted to migrate, his people said to him: "Stay, and follow whatever religion you wish" 1. al-Zubayr said: when he came to Medina, the Prophet said to him: "My people expelled me, and your people kept you," and Nu'aym said: "Your people drove you out to migrate, and my people held me back from it" 1. al-Waqidi said: he became Muslim after ten, and he concealed his Islam. Ibn Abi Khaythama said: he became Muslim after thirty-eight persons 1.

Fighting and transmission

Ibn Qutayba reports that Nu'aym fought fiercely in the expedition of Zayd ibn Haritha (may God be pleased with him) in which he struck the Banu Fazara 1. Ahmad relates from Nu'aym ibn al-Nahham that he said: "The call to dawn prayer was given while I was in my wife's cloak on a cold day, and I said: I wish the caller had said: whoever stays, there is no blame" 1. Ibn Hajar weakens the transmission of Isma'il ibn Ayyash from the people of Medina concerning him 2.

Umar ibn al-Khattab

Second caliph (634–644); under his rule the early community conquered Syria, Egypt and much of the Sasanian Empire. Remembered in Sunni tradition as al-Faruq, the model of just rule.
